Development and amateur programs are a significant part. However there are "general" differences between blacks and other races. IIRC, black folks have elongated tendons and tend to carry more fat in their muscles. There's nothing "racist" about recognizing differences without making wholesale inferences... or establishing "value" based on generalities.
Wow - what a racist thread.
It's the development folks. Black or white or purple - whatever - it doesn't matter. Compare states with the most organized football leagues for younger kids. Then compare states that have organized football at most of their middle schools. Look at the states that start S&C younger, that have PE programs in their schools, etc. Then look at the BCS schools that have coaching staffs that actually stay close with their state's HS coaches. TN HS's do not place nearly as high a priority on player development in football as the states with lesser populations that are "talent rich." You have to train them up young or they find other things to do with their time. TN has a more balanced number of good football, good baseball, good basketball and good soccer players than many other SEC states.
There's a whole lot of yellow on that map everywhere not named Memphis. :ermm:
UT needs to begin facilitating dialog with suburban high school coaches around Nashville in particular and mabey even north Alabama/Huntsville. Memphis has always been shady and the pull of LSU, Bama, and Arky is strong but we can't keep losing guys to MissSt and Miss. That's simply unacceptable. It would also be nice if more HS coaches in TN taught an offense that was similar to the pro model UT has traditionally used. The single wing should be outlawed. :twocents:
If we can return to respectability this year our coaches might have a shot at raiding the talent rich Carolinas, Virgina, and even Maryland. Proximity might help us out in that region but they won't come until we stop sucking.
In bottom line numbers, Tn has fewer black residents than MS, LA, AL, GA, FL, and SC. IIRC, it has more than KY and AR. That's a big part of the answer but not all of it. All things considered, TN STILL produces a disproportionately low number of high end prospects. SC, MS, and AL produce more than double the blue chip prospects on avg while their black populations are only between 7% and 25% greater.
CA, OH, PA, and other states with a low percentage and wide distribution of black residents have more of their white/other race kids become great football players. Demographics are a part of it but so is the quality of youth football. You can probably say that the average size of HS classes is a factor. Areas with higher population have greater competition and opportunities to play.
There are other states that perform just as poorly or worse compared to their demographics. NC, MI, MD, IL, and NY all have large black populations and produce relatively few good football prospects.
You call Md and Va "talent rich" According to this report:
Rivals-Old-High - Talent pool: Where the DI signees come from
The number of Div I FB players signed from each state last year was:
Tenn: 44 out of 22,868 total HS players
Md/DC: 49 out of 16,123
Va.: 56 out of 25,651
SC: 44 out of 18,962
Ark: 28 out of 11,120
Miss: 52 out of 22,306
KY: 19 out of 13, 842
Mizz: 18 out of 23,504
Oreg: 11 of 13,357
Wisc: 22 of 29,442
WV: 3 of 6,404
Mich: 59 of 43,678
Well a lot of things contribute to that. First the prevalance of basketball and baseball in this state. Quite a few of the best athletes in TN never play football. Also youth football is still largely in its infancy or non existant in some parts of the state. Then one side of the state has great coaching and mediocre to good athletes for the most part and the other has great athletes and poor to mediocre coaching

For southern blacks fleeing the south during the 50-60's TN was "flyover" country on their way to Indy, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Cleveland, etc. There are plenty of northerners coming south today however it seems the great majority are white. The poor blacks that relocated to rustbelt cities seem to lack the mobility or desire to return south.
Good link Brook. We don't do so bad nationally 21/50 but we suck at 7/8 of SEC states. I found that Texas being so far down the list was suprising to say the least.
This and the fact that East Tennessee had no need of black slaves in the 1st place. They did not grow cotton.
What % of D-1 football players are black?
How does it compare with the U.S.'s % of blacks?
or % of black men in college?
