Pool Owners Thread

don't leave your golf bag laying around, nephews and nieces will chunk the balls into it :) it is a known fact

So I'm ordered a new pump but idk if I want a DE filter or a cartridge filter.

Any thoughts?

dude just buy a new motor and impeller for your pump instead of the whole housing. Youll avoid the re-plumb which blows.

Ah, thanks. I believe mine is sand, but I'm still learning.

Its usually the "best" filter but its a pain in the butt to clean in my opinion. Cleaning involves yanking it out and spraying all the old DE off then soaking the grids in a cleaning solution then hosing that off, put it back together, dump about 6 pounds of DE in through the skimmer, etc. My pool water though is pretty crystal clear all year.

I could see water coming out into the pool. So the pump was pulling water just not enough. Does priming help with that, or do you only prime the pump when it's not drawing water at all?

Your filter should have an air release as part of the pressure gauge.

After cleaning the grids and reassembling (with a working pump) you open the valve on top to release the air. Start the pump and you will feel air coming out. Eventually water will spray out then you just close the valve. You shouldn't have to unscrew anything.

As for priming the pump I usually just remove the pumps lid and basket and place a garden hose in there and let it run.

You'll notice the level drop in the pump if you remove the water and that's my indication that there is still air in the system. When you can stop the water and the level remains pretty stable in the basket area you should have the pump primed and ready to go. The key is to have water remain at a level above the intake to the impeller.

When first dealing with a pool its going to be expensive and a lot of trial by error but once you get it down its not that bad.

I also use these products alot:
Pool & Spa :: Natural Chemistry

Keeps the pool and its components running smooth. I add a scale prevention to my pool once a month to protect my salt cell. If you don't or neglect to clean your salt cell often you get this:

I cut it out when I opened up the motor. It was the only way I could get to the screws on the bottom. So I'll have to redo the PVC piping anyway. Plus the PVC was old and had a hole in it.
