It's hard to know about his recruiting ability. Texas has a much bigger talent pool and he had the advantage of having the only SEC school in Texas.

Tennessee has to recruit heavily from surrounding states and nationally, being able to say you are an SEC school is not much of an advantage against the teams we are competing against for recruits.

That's not true anymore. There are 19 composite 4-stars in the class of 2019 in the state of Tennessee. And the 2020 class is just as talented.

Instate talent in Tennessee has improved to the point that now we're #5 in the country after Florida, Texas, Georgia, and California.

Nobody says LSU needs to recruit surrounding states and nationally to field a championship caliber team. And according to the recruiting rankings, in the class of 2019, the state of Tennessee has more composite 4-stars than the state of Louisiana.

We are LOADED with talent. Kevin Sumlin will do fine here recruiting the state of Tennessee.

look...I would have said no to Sumlin a couple of weeks ago when the sky was the limit. Not that I think he's a bad coach but I thought we could do better. If I was in Currie's current position I would rip someone's arm off grabbing for the pen to sign Sumlin considering the other names that we have been tied to in the past week.

This does seem to fit the current pattern we are in: good coach, bottom dweller, good coach, bottom dweller.

I guess after Sumlin tells us to beat feet we will be going after Butch 3.0 whoever that might be.

I don’t think Sumlin is a great coach but he’s a lot better than some of the others being mentioned.

I just worry about his player development.

The people saying no are either expecting Gruden still or racist. This would be a slam dunk hire. Especially after the road we’ve been down the last five days.

Mr. Barnes - The last fired coach brought in from Texas has been a great hire. Bring on Sumlin.

Great point! And many people said we shouldn't hire him because he was fired, washed up, and couldn't recruit. They are eating crow now

Yes. Support 100%.

Could make the team relevant instantly.

Recent SEC West experience.

Proven winner.

Could be the right place and right time for both Coach Sumlin and the University of Tennessee.

But if he has those ties to Texas and can lock down Tennessee then it's a good start.

Yeah...i heard someone make a point on Basilio, yesterday I believe, saying that Tennessee had 60 4-5 star athletes from 2015-19. That is more that most surrounding states and only 10 less than Louisiana in that same time frame. Tennessee is starting to develop some decent talent. If we can put a fence around the state then we would have some great talent coming into UT. We need to start by grabbing our previously committed 5* OL and to do that we need to make a good hire.

I voted no because I feel strongly that Tee needs to be offered first (I can't believe I actually agree with Spurrier about this). However if Tee says no then go ahead with Sumlin.

I honestly can't see why people are so gaga over Tee. Take away his time played here and just look at his resume and people would absolutely riot if his name was mentioned for the job. He has 7 years as a position coach and 2 years as a coordinator where the HC is still the play caller.

Now if we hire Sumlin I would love to see him go all in at making Tee an offer to finally come back to Knoxville as OC and letting him get more seasoning.

As for Tee's stats.

USC averaged 34 points a game the year before he became 0C. USC averaged 34 points a game the year he became OC and they are averaging 34 a game this year. So no particular improvement from him taking over as OC.

no, he just got fired. only reason he has a name is because of one player he didn't even recruit. all types of talent he did nothing with and turned a great DC (the Chief) to mediocre.

He recruited well...and will get us into that Texas talent. Really want Lane, but I would be happy with Sumlin.

For those of you against Sumlin--at this point who is better? I'm not being a jerk, genuinely interested in your thoughts. They aren't offering Kiffin or Tee, maybe Miles but other than that what proven coaches are left?

I honestly expect it to be Sumlin or miles.... Sumlin says no I beliee we close the deal with miles... IF SUMLIN SAYS NO.

I would support Sumlin. He is not a thrilling hire but at least he has coached in the SEC. Maybe he will get a great supporting staff and do good.

I voted yes for Sumlin support.

(Quick note re: Tee Martin
Tennessee experience as a National Championship winning quarterback notwithstanding, Tee's name is in the discussion among voters for Assistant Coach of the Year, this year, so don't sell the man short.)
