and all but Manning had healthy upper-classmen on the roster.

Starting off the year with 4 home games...I'm liking the idea of Bray under center (of course I like the idea of Skip Bayless uncer center if it means Stephens isn't there)

Ainge, Clausen, and Manning all started as freshmen. I don't see Stephens getting in the way of Bray continuing this pattern.

Manning is a rare exception, and he was 3rd string to start the year. Under Clausen, we definitely had growing pains, as we started out 2-3. Ainge split time with Schaeffer, and Schaeffer actually started the 1st game. That season turned out pretty well, but I don't know if Bray will be as ready in year one as any of those QBs.

Only pattern I meant was starting a large amount of games as a freshman at UT.

It has definitely happened. It is just not ideal. And the situation in 2010 might turn out to be better than 2008 or 2009. It's just a bad situation to be in from 2008-2009 and a not ideal situation in 2010. That's a really tough stretch at QB. But I do know it's too early to pass judgment on this season.

Clausen had Meachem, Swain, Smith, Fayton, Hannon, and C Brown plus a much better and deeper OL than this one... He still stank it up and helped lead the Vols to a 5-6 season.

So whats your point? Mechem was great, but I don't see how anyone else besides Chris Brown would be anything to write home about. And the 5-6 season was very much a calaboration of Ainge and Clausen and Coaching. Crompton throwing 10 yards over Gerald Jones head right to a FS who crapped on himself because he was trying to get to the reciever becase he no one around him, has absolutely nothing to do with talent at receiver. Crompton shi+ the bed all of last year, and after last week is showing that was no fluke.
So, again I ask, whats your point? That Crompton was better than Rick? If you are all I have to say is, look at the stats, and if your going to use the "he had more talent" excuse then there is no reason to argue. Worste case senerio Rick is as bad as Crompton, but don't get it twisted, Crompton is not better in any way shape form or fasion better than any STARTING QB we have had in atleast the last 20+ years.

It's not that all of our current QB's are that bad, it's just that Crompton is what I like to call a Practice All American. I coach high school and sometimes you just get those kids that kill it in practice and stink it up at gametime. I just hope he doesn't get another coach fired because I think Lane Kiffin could make a huge difference with this team. We have the talent we just need the missing piece. Step it up during game time or coach needs to find someone that will. Besides we have some young talent at QB that if we started working on now could possibly turn into good QB's. Look at Ainge, he was garbage initially but by his last year he was extremely accurate. Our problem at that time was that for some dumb reason the coach kept Arian Foster in the game and he was extremely overrated. Shoulda had young Hardesty starting and our Vols may have won that SEC title against LSU.

this is my first post on the board (as if you couldn't tell by looking at my post count!) anywho. I'm 26 years old and have loved the vols ever since I could understand the game of football. No other sport matters to me (other than CFB) and no other team holds so dear in my heart than our vols. i've sat among many of you on saturdays over the past 15 years (that's when I first went to a UT game). I share most of your sentiments in worrying out our QB situation. HOWEVER, i do not think crompton is completely hopeless or awful. I do worry about his decision making....that is about the only thing I see wrong with him. He has abilities (well hidden most of the time) that can prove him to be a great qb. sometimes we even get a quick glimpse of what a great qb he is, only to have him make a mistake on the next play or next possession. He has demonstrated a better leadership ability this year but still, he is still plagued with these "bad decisions". if he can snap out of that, we wouldn't all worry so much about him. i think this might be a general agreement among everyone. he has a hell of an arm...he just needs it to work with him and not against him.

i voted "maybe". only because ut has been known, at least since andy kelly, to have pretty decent qbs. weve had a huge slump in the past 8 or so years where only eric ainge and casey clausen really stand out to me. clausen's brother, leak, and crompton are at the bottom of the list of the past decade. crompton though has plenty of chances to redeem himself and i really think deep down that he will snap out of it all, stop making dumb decision and show us that great qb that he really is. some of his bad throws arent even completely his fault. ill definitely say he has already improved this year....he is just constantly under a microscope because of last year's debacle. any good play from him seems to be shadowed by a small mistake. im definitely looking forward to starting fresh with a new kid next year (tyler bray) because kiffin will have 4 years with him (i hope). poor crompton has been thrown around by everyone for his whole stay at UT.

Maybe it's a function of my young age, but Crompton is the worst QB I can remember watching. Not just with Tennessee, but the worst I've ever seen in my lifetime. I've never seen a QB who can get so rattled, so quick.

Just heard on a 790 the zone in Atlanta that Crompton may be the worst QB to play at a BCS school. What do you guys think?

There are a lot of bottom feeder schools in the BCS that have abysmal quarterbacking, we have just never been acclimated to it. Now that we are, we think the sky is falling. They're just trying to put talking points together, and this topic will resonate.

So the answer is no...

Anyone who asks this question must not have seen any of the QBs Vanderbilt put on the field in the 1990s or the guys fielded by Oklahoma during the John Blake Error.

I voted no. It definitely has to be Nick Stephens, since he can't start over this flunky.

Tennessee hasn't had a lot of losing seasons.........and he's been here for two of them, 2005 & 2008 and this season isn't looking that great.

JC is not that good...He was overrated coming out of high school and that is just the truth.....I give him credit for talking up TN Football to recruites...but let's face it, he sucks...he has since day 1....remember the AR game in 06'? Terrible!!!!!
Let JC play out his season..and besides Jeff Francis, he will be the worst QB in the last 30 yrs for TN...

GO Vols!

Francis was at least good enough to get an invite to the Blue Gray game. In which postseason event will Crompton participate?
