there were two Ainge's...pre and post Cutcliffe...it is largely the reason that we had some hope JC could be turned around...EA's resurrection should be seen as the anomaly that it was

Correction. There were 3 Ainge's.
There was the Ainge who played as a freshman and had swagger until season-ending injury.
Then there was the Ainge who was supposed to be the starter, but thanks to the win over A&M the position was up in the air even into the next season with Rick Clausen.
Then there was the Ainge who had nobody on his heels so he could settle down and be the starter.

Honestly, I think the beginning of the end of Fulmer can be traced back to the win over aTm.
If we lose that bowl game, there is no question that Ainge is the starter, and 2005 becomes a vastly different season.

and while we're at it the idea that matthews/suggs were "consideably worse" is frankly, absurd. Can anyone really imagine Crompton capable of an LSU comeback game? Please

I just can't get that sec championship game against lsu out of my mind and how Ainge singlehandedly blew it with his refusal to sell out and play football. OMG he would never stand in the pocket with any courage.

criticism/adulation that a big time program offers, there is a scholarship waiting for you at Furman...they'll live.

That game was totally Ainge's fault. I mean how in the world do you throw to a curl in single coverage when the corner is giving him 5 yards, only to have him jump the pass to make the pick and run it back for the TD. I mean who throws into single coverage with Zenon 5 yards off the receiver??!?
In case you missed it, watch at 5:40 in this video to see that the INT was Zenon making a hell of a play instead of an Erik Ainge duck.

Do you not agree that there is a #1 QB in UT's history???? If you do, then by default there HAS to be a "worst" QB in UT's history. I'm just asking that question..... Not everyone wears those orange tinted glasses and drinks that orange flavored kool-aid you and your Cromptonites drink.

And it now goes further than him just making "mistakes." I believe he PURPOSELY gave little to no effort to make a 1st down in one particular play last sat….

If you'll remember, it was like 3rd and 12 or something, and he rolled out to his right and pressure was coming BUT he just threw the ball at the feet of a player. He could have ran another 15 feet parallel to the LOS looking for a WR to get open, but what does he do, he sheepishly grounds the ball on a big third down when we're down 9 points late in the 3rd.

Now I’m not saying make a bad throw, but he could have easily kept rolling out looking for a WR and if nothing developed, throw the ball into the stands. I believe he did that with the mindset of, "Ok, you don't want me to force it, I’ll just ground the ball and see how you like that....." Real mature....

I'm not the only one that recognized this play, afterwards there was a hail of boo birds from the stands.

what part of my response was too difficult for you to comprehend (that means understand)? My point wasn't whether or not Crompton is the worst QB--my point was that it's spineless for anonymous posters like you to get on here and set up such a tasleless and classless poll. I'm sure you were a football stud back in your day and could have been the second coming of Peyton if given the chance.

I repeat, you are not the number 1 Vol fan because of your petty potshots at college kids.

Crompton has never quit and was trying to rally the team Saturday. He is not the best player we have but he has character. I watched the replay of the game last night and he stunk it up but he kept coming back. I hope my son will persevere and keep trying even if it isn't easy and thousands of people are booing him.

IMHO, Crompton has a number of problems that are probably not fixable: 1) He has a problem with pocket mobility 2) He waits too long to release the ball; gives DBs time to recover and get to the ball 3) He seems to have a real problem with depth perception because he misses receivers wide open by throwing too far or too short, not to left or right and 4) He seems to be too nonchalant about his errors. It's sad that we are in a quarterback mess, of all things. Opponents know we are not a real throwing threat, so they are going to pack it in and make us throw, and not allow us to display our strong running backs. I feel for Kiffen right now because a quarterback problem involves every single play as well as the overall game plan...not much we can hope for at this point until someone else gets here to handle the ball.

I can actually put up with the other errors. But this one I cannot. That is the MAIN problem I have with Crompton. It's always excuse after excuse. Which is why he continues to make the same problems over and over again.

Never played football. I can throw a pretty good spiral though.

Look, I’m sure you're related to Crompton, or in some way can relate to him and his situation, but to us realists, Crompton is horrible and the worst part is, he continues to make the same mistakes and never really accepts responsibility for his actions (which is why he continues to make the same mistakes.) It’s a cycle that sadly, won’t end.

:stop:Obviously you need your head examined. I'm in no way trying to say Rick Clausen was great by any means, but the stat comparison with Crompton alone shows Rick was better. Not to mention the fact that he came into the game with a huge hole that Ainge had left and brought this team back in the second half to beat the #4 LSU Tigers in one of the greatest comebacks in Tennessee History. Give me a big came Crompton has won?

You are talking out of your ass.
How many interceptions were thrown in the last 29 minutes of the game? How poorly did he play?
He was 6-9 in the 2nd half following the interception, and wasn't given the opportunity to help the team win on the drive that stalled at the 1 yard line. In the last drive where it was throw or go home, the defense pinned their ears back and came hard each time. The O-Line collapsed. On the last play there was a sack coming from every single direction that there was literally nothing that could be done.
How much better should Crompton have played that second half?

Yeah, Clausen could throw over 5, I mean 3 yards down the field!

Clausen was horrible!

How about looking for someone else other than Jones?

:dunno:

He's easily the worst QB I've ever seen start on a semi-regular basis. He's also probably the worst current starter at any BCS school.

FAIL.
Not one of his completions in the 2nd half was to Jones.
Hancock: 3
Brown: 2
Stocker: 1

LOL!

Internet tough guy alert!

:cray:

Where do you poeple come from?

So when Crompton was throwing to thin air because Jones did not run the proper route that had nothing to do with losing the game?

Ever heard of timing routes?

I personally think this kind of poll should be disallowed on VolNation. It reflects poorly on what has grown to be one of the most respectable boards in the SEC.

I will say that one of my problems of this game was playing people like Jones. I think he was rushed back and should have been eased into the rotation. Don't throw your #1 target out there when he isn't ready (and not running the right routes). I think we should have stuck wtih the starters he had last week. Oh well.
