Today, one most have both, offense and defense to win. We now have the offensive base, now we need to get the defensive base. Lets go get one. Steele might be better than any we could get at this time.

Of course I do. His defense sucked at ARK. They gave up 50 points to Missouri. 50. UT gave up 12 to Missouri. They gave up 52 to Bama. 52. UT gave up 48 to Bama. They gave up 63 points to Florida. 63. UT gave up 31 to Florida.

I do not want Odom. Not in any way shape form or fashion. As bad as UT was on defense they were better than Arkansas. UT being so horrible offensively, was the main issue......

Tennessee was better defensively and was on the field most of the game in every game...

This begs to the answer to the age old question: Which comes first, the chicken or the egg? In this case, he must be able to do some of both. I don't think you can teach and have guys play really good defense unless you have been successful recruiting.

What about giving Muschamp a call? Or is he taking the Butch way out and collecting his buyout while being an advisor?

Count me among those that want to staff with high quality coaches/developers. With the Sword of Damocles hanging over our head in the form of NCAA sanctions we need to focus on getting the most out of what we have. If Heupel can get the most out of the players and get them to play hard for 4 quarters every game then Tennessee will consistently beat the Vandy's and Kentucky's of the conference and pull out a win vs the Florida's and Georgia's now and then. When we get to that point then recruiting will take care of itself. It is going to be a long, hard slog even if this is the right hire.

Somebody else already said something to this effect but I'm not concerned with big names or recruiting. Get competent coaching the rest will take care of itself.

You are right. I think that is why programs have to be built over time. Get the best players you can get. If you can make them better, better players (ie, players with more options) will follow. Rinse and repeat. It takes some time and iteration to get from where we are to where we want to be.

Bill Clark is a solid coach and if we get Reeves, we will still be able to pull some recruits out of Alabama.

With the hiring of Heupel. I think we will recruit Florida heavily.

That is a good shout. The best tactical reactions to these modern passing offenses have come from defensive coordinators outside the P5. If Heupel could get him, then that would be fine hire.

I'd also like to see Heupel talk to Gillespie at Tulsa, Newberry at Navy, and Dale Jones at App State. Jones has paid his dues across decades and his leadership capabilities on the field remain strong off it as a coach.

Any of those guys would be a good hire with our defensive personnel as it exists presently. Strong motivators. Excellent teachers.
