Poll: Can Butch Get It Done

Will Butch get it done here?

Tennessee football coach Butch Jones finally admitted that last year’s team, which was favored to win the SEC East, fell short of those expectations.

Since then he has steadfastly said he did not think it was a disappointment.

Thousands of disappointed Vols fans would disagree with the head coach.

It’s why his name is being bantered about as being on the hot seat. I think key injuries, especially on the defense, led to the Vols 4-loss season and a minor bowl game in Shreveport.

Speaking of sleepers - is Joe Biddle on ambien?

Too much fun ain't all its cracked up to be. I usually get myself in trouble.

Glad your doing better. I've had you and charger both on my mind. I'm sending you both good vibes and wishing you well.

Appreciate that.

Good so far.

There is speculation that Gruden will get back into college coaching and that his dream job is Tennessee.

Gruden himself recently quashed that rumor. Said no way he'll coach at the college level. Too many limitations, can't spend nearly as much time working with the players as he would need. Said he'd get any college team into trouble, and fast.

He pretty much guaranteed that when/if he goes back to coaching, it'll be in the pros.

I believe Butch will be around for a few seasons, I dont see them going backwards by hiring a new coach if they cant spend a little $$ to get the absolute right person. We have to make do with what we currently have and hope for the best.

So much wrong with the line of thought. Pretty much says, well we could do worse but I don't want to spend money on decent talent to do better. I want Tennessee to win the SEC more often than every 20 years.

But that is not who we are. We have to accept mediocrity.

Probably because we don't shell out the money for big name proven coaches.

The only big name proven coaches out there when they signed were Saban, Meyer, and Harbaugh. Dabo Swinney wasn't a big name coach and neither was Jimbo Fisher. That's a really bad reason to lower expectations to Vanderbilt levels.

Honestly, if we just had a decent football coach, we would of won the east the last two years. If Jones is as good on Saturdays as he is the rest of the week, he would be in the company of Urban Meyer. Jones's big weaknesses are game planning, and strategy.

Thing is Tennessee had the money to get any of those big names you listed. But as usual, some higher ups went and f'd up.

Meyer and Harbaugh weren't going to come here unless we offered an insane amount of money. The closest thing to a big name would be a washed out Lovie Smith. Anyone else would pose questions.

You are assuming that a different coach is able to bring in the same exact players. Big assumption. You are assuming that said players would be successful with whatever offense and defense the other coach runs. Big assumption. You are assuming that a different coach would have fixed the off the field issues in the same manner. Big assumption.

Strong was one of the other coaches Tennessee wanted and many would have been fine with that. How did he work out at Texas?

The truth is that none of us, me or you or anyone else, really know how good or how bad the last 4 years would have been with a different coach.

Reality is we are in a much better place. We are in such a good place that it allows folks like you to make statements like you are making - that are big IF assumptions and not facts.

We know what we have with Butch. A terrible gameday coach who can run a program.

A "terrible gameday coach" doesn't beat SC in 2013. Doesn't win 3 straight bowl games. "Terrible gameday coach"es lose all those and more regular season games. Not going to quibble over what label he's earned beyond that but "terrible" is just shock value tripe.

A good gameday coach doesn't lose to SC and Vandy with a playoff caliber roster.

Yeah, "terrible" is overboard. I could accept "mediocre" or "middling" or "questionable."

And another problem with "terrible" is that it makes things sound permanent. Butch is learning on the job. He'll be a better game day coach this year than he was last year. And so, he might actually become a pretty solid one. Too early to know how quickly he might get there. We'll just have to watch and see, whether he remains at Tennessee for the long term, or splits his years up at different colleges.

He's had 10 years to learn. That's actually a really long time in coaching.

Maybe we didn't have a playoff caliber roster when we played those games? In any case, those are called upsets for a reason. Clemson lost against Pitt and sweated out wins against Auburn,Troy and NC State. They were playoff caliber. :)

Injuries are also his fault. He's had injury problems since 2014. If this was the first time, I'd give him the benefit, but this is the third straight year.

Who gave you the timer? 4 years in a big program. Same time frame, Nick Saban wasn't reinventing the wheel at Michigan State.
