Not my game, but it is in my hometown. For anybody else that plays in a home or club game, please be careful.

Local poker game robbed at gunpoint

By Julia Hunter, New Era Staff Writer
A poker game took an unlucky turn this weekend when several people were robbed at gunpoint.

Family and friends had gathered to play cards around 10:20 p.m. Friday on Woodbine Street, as they have every week for several years, when two masked men kicked in the door and demanded everyone’s money.

“The door popped open and these two men said ‘Be calm, we are just here to get your money,’” said Gladys Dossett, of Hopkinsville, who was playing cards with the group.

“They told us to hold up our hands and pull up our blouses. I guess they wanted to make sure we didn’t have any money in our bras.”

After taking more than $3,000 and several cellular phones, the men ran away.

“They told us not to come out for five minutes or somebody would shoot us,” Dossett said.

Johnny Gibbs, Joshua Brown, Mary Murphy, Billy McGhee, Mary McGhee, Beatrice McGhee, Gladys Dossett, Thelma Gibbs and Judith Gilbert were playing cards in a small building behind a house on Woodbine Street.

“I just thank the good Lord that nobody got hurt,” Dossett said. “My money didn’t mean nothing compared to that.”

The victims filed a report with the Christian County Sheriff’s Department. They were not able to give a description of the men. No arrests have been made in connection with the robbery, a sheriff’s official said. The incident is still under investigation.

Dossett said she will no longer be participating in the weekly card game.

“I’m done out there,” she said.

Yes, be mindful of who you let know about your game. There's always a risk. I've played in a few very shady games in ATL. I didn't do well in them b/c I was so nervous about the company.

I play in a game at my local country club, so somwehre around 500 members, plus anybody they might have told, plus anyone who works there, knows about it. There are a few precautions taken, but the thought of some unsavory character walking in there at midnight and walking out with the bankroll has crossed my mind more than once.

There is a sheriff from a neighboring county that plays occasionally. That, at least, should be somewhat of a deterrent for any potential Jesse James.

Surely they would know better than to hold an esteemed lawyer at gunpoint.:)

The sheriff (especially if they are from Cocke, Shelby or Campbell County) is the first person I would fear. :eek:hmy:

He's not. He's from Western Kentucky. That's not a lot better (see: Bill Dillard,) but I don't think this particular guy is going to hold up the poker game.

Good Lord. I just did a Google on Bill Dillard, and turned up this:

link: Notable Kentucky African Americans -

before finding the story I was looking for:

1/18/90, Hopkinsville, KY, WHAS, KNN. Christian County, KY,
Sheriff William Dillard & chief deputy & others arrested 17 Jan
90 on Federal indictment for cocaine distribution & accepting
bribes to protect cocaine distribution after a one year FBI
investigation.

You would the University of Kentucky would research the "Prominent African Americans" before posting such a list.

I've gambled with cops before :p Most don't care about friendly, low dollar games.
