I have read alot of nay sayers , both Vol fans and trolls , talking about 7 wins if we are lucky and that we are gonna get killed by Florida and Bama . I have read Rivals pundits ..well that was horrible. Here are a few reasons I am optimistic :

1) I believe the athletes are there and they have been . I don't think UT is USC in terms of talent and depth , but I beleive there is alot of potential with the guys on the field that was wasted by the previous coaches. There is a ton of speed too .

2) I don't believe the QB'S , any of the three , lack in potential . I know Crompton has been dogged heavily and he did look terrible last season . ALL 3 of them looked terrible at times last season . I find it hard to believe that 3 able bodied , physically talented kids are absolute mush between the ears . I base this on how bad other guys looked in the Clawfense that we saw. The O line gave up 5 sacks in 07 , 25 in the clawfense . Foster had 1000 yards with Cut , Lucas Taylor had 1000 and Briscoe had 600. They disappeared in 08..all of them . I think whoever the starter ends up being will suprise us just like Ainge did when Cutt came home.

3) I think the D will improve ....even though it was ranked #4 in the nation last season . Monte's system is simple , aggressive , and predicated on speed . It punishes opposing offenses by giving them the underneath and then hitting hard . It tries to cause turnovers and it will be good to see UT in the turnover + column . I do not think you will see things that hurt the D , such as prevents with a 6 point lead or the ' Mustang Package ' when translated to English means ' Give up 3rd and Long '

4 ) UT lacks depth on the O line , but I think they have quality . The blocking attack is simple and effective ..it is zone and lets the backs find the lanes . He does not employ alot of different blocking formations ...so it is simple and the O line and backs can play fast without having to think . There are alot less plays , its reads from top to bottom rather than bottom to top . The QB should be able to play very fast .

5) Coupled with a good defense ..the offense need only be moderately productive to get W's . Just look at when the Vols gave up on the Clawfense against Vandy and KY and just lined up and ran the Zone read option . They scored points and won time of possession and won games.

6) Special teams will be vastly improved with Lane opening up the roster for special teams and will a proven special teams guy like Gran running it . Hopefully , no more bad field position and scores given away by 'special needs' teams.

7 ) I think Lane will improve the athletic ability of this team with his enthusiasm and conditioning program . I think turnovers will be eliminated or brought to normal levels ...and if we do lose a game , I would like it not to be due to 3 turnovers. I believe the coaches will make that so .

To sum it up , I think that between Chaney and Lane , two proven offensive coaches , and a stable of good running backs and receivers from recruiting and the bench that this offense will be simple and effective . I believe that of the three QB's , one of the three will rise from the ashes of the Clawfense . I believe turnovers will be eliminated. I think the defense will remain dominant , they will cause more turnovers , and eliminated tactical mistakes . Special teams will become special again . Based on all of this ..I believe the vols will be in every game they play this season .

I agree 100%. I'll even stick my neck out, I believe that we upset Florida this year. The past two years, we mailed in our effort and it showed. The games were over by the end of the first half. Hell, last year the game was over before the first quarter had ended. I believe for all of the reasons that you mentioned we have a chance to beat Florida this year. Good Post, Thanks!

I think we have an opportunity . Been up all night goofing off and have looked at this match up . I think Lane can eliminate turnovers which is huge. The leaders in turnover margin this season ? Florida +22 Okie +23 . They just happen to be the best two teams in the nation . UT , gaining alot of INTs with their great secondary , gave it away alot and was only +2 . Florida was + 3 against the Vols which made a huge difference.
I do not believe UF will score a ton of points on the Vols if they correct turnovers. The Lizards scored only 31 against Bama ( #3 D ) 30 against UT ( #4 D ) 30 against Ole Miss ( #17 D ) 26 against Miami ( #25 D ) The big #'s they put up where against 2nd and 3rd tier ranked defenses . As long as the D stays strong and they eliminate turnovers ...the Vols are in that game .

i like this post and it does help us with FLA that they lose Harvin whose production was 17 td's and over 1200 total yards

Yeah Percy is one of a kind , it will take away a dimension . Yet another reason to believe .

as i reponded to another post, it will be crompton. he was the #3 overall qb, and #1 pro-style qb coming out of high school. last year the O was too complexed, this year he will play like he did against LSU when Ainge was hurt. he would have won that game if the D had not given the game away at the end. imo

Nice post 73. I pretty much agree with everything.

To those predicting a win over FLA, I am not going to go that far. I will say that Bammer, GA and FLA all believe they will destroy us this year. AT LEAST ONE of them will be very disappointed after they get beat by us this year.

lol i agree we won't take down the gators in 2009.... but i will say the chances this year are better than last year.... but that doesn't mean they are very good i do agree that we will beat one of them (fla, ga, bama) most likely it'll be GA

Well, 7 of the points were a Punt returned for a TD. Our D gave up 23 against them, and our O left 14 on the board with turnovers within the 10 yard line. it's amazing how quickly the 30-6 game becomes 23-20, assuming that they are going up against a pumped up UT team throughout the 2nd half.

UF would have come out and put up 50 in the 2nd half if they'd need to. UT was never really in that game

I am constantly amazed at the ability of some UT fans to figure out a way to make that game close.

I dont see how your optimistic about our O line after last season.

Yes, you can bring up the fact that they were playing under the clawfense, but the fact remains that they still sucked at blocking. It doesnt matter what scheme your running if your getting beat 1 v. 1

All I'm saying is that the game should have been much closer. We gave up 21 points, 14 from red zone turnovers, and 7 on a punt. That's a 21 point swing that solid play would not have allowed. I'm not trying to make myself feel better, I'm just stating facts. Go ahead and disagree with me. Tell me what I'm saying is incorrect, and I'll retract it.

Ridiculous that Florida woulda came out and put 50 + if UT had challenged ..blah blah blah . Florida relished running the score up on anyone and everyone ...even The Citadel . Not a problem to me , teams should run it up if they can with the BCS garbage. Point is , if they coulda , they woulda. Tebow could not complete a pass beyond the first quarter . UT committed to stopping the pass after that to slow the game . Say what you will , but with Berry and D Mo that was an excellent secondary . Florida's output of 30 points against top tier defenses was consistant all year . They put up the big points against second tier defenses or with the benefit of +3 turnovers. That is where I would hand it to the Lizards ...their +22 turnovers . If they coulda put up the points ...they woulda regardless of if they were winning .

Again , UT stops the bleeding when they stop the turnovers. They shore up special teams , get a ball control O and remain dominant on D , they are in the game . If UT's D is ranked in the top 10 ...florida will score 30 or less. The stats don's lie.

The exact same guys in 2004 , only allowed 5 sacks and produced a 1000 yard back . I think the offense was ranked #10 nationally on the back of the offensive line .

So yeah the got beat one on one in the Clawfense ....but the previous season dictates that scheme does matter if you are getting beat 1 v 1 . 07 , not beat , superior . 08 , beaten , inferior . Same guys ...different scheme.
