You know Mullen runs a spread right? Kinda contradicts what your post is about..Fuente runs a spread as well. I would like a pro style offense but mixed with some spread. Similar to what Ala runs. A powerful and physical run game mixed with a QB who can take off when he needs to but can kill you with his arm. Very similar to what Clemson had with Watson and what Oklahoma has with Mayfield. They both were so hard to stop. They can score in 1 play or go 80 yards in 4-5 mins..Nightmares for DC's.
Been watching old Oregon games... recent TCU and Iowa State games... they all have the same themes / scenarios playing out.
Spread offenses... quick strikes... quick three and outs... season ending injuries to key players.
Iowa State has pulled some big upsets. However, they also lose to teams they shouldn't because they are so thin. They are on their third quarterback. About the time he gets in a groove, he will get hurt. They have had games where the starting MLB had to take snaps at QB.
TCU lost to a depleted Iowa State team.
Other than Tennessee and Mississippi St (before Dan Mullen,) Oregon got beat by every SEC team they played.
The Vols need a tactician... not a system coach. Being tactical, in the SEC, requires an offensive style that takes into account the health of the team over the course of a physical conference season. That means... POSSESSING THE BALL... and reducing the number of snaps played.
Aggressive offense... yes. No-huddle, speed spread, sideways BS... no more.
So, please... no Campbell, no Kelly, no Patterson.
Mullen - yes. Gruden - Yes. Fuente - Yes. Cutcliffe - yes.
What do the 6 teams that have beaten Alabama the last 5 years have in common? They run the spread and have exceptional QB play.
Now, what G5 coaches have a history of running these offenses and recruiting/coaching QBs? Be satisfied with Frost or Norvell, because besides Campbell or Mullen, that's what you are likely getting.
