I am sorry if this is a basic post, but I would be grateful for some clarification:

I keep hearing about our great recruiting class for '14, but when I look at Rivals, a lot of our points seem to come from the fact that we have 33 commits currently. That's great....but I thought that SEC schools were limited to 25 signees each class. I think some can be back-counted, but can someone explain to me how many of the 33 we'll realistically be able to sign?

Short answer: Nobody knows how many we will actually sign. Its been hinted at that we will take 35.

Now about the Rivals/points thing. You say a lot of our points come from the amount of commits. That is false. Rivals only counts the 20 highest rated commits.

Butch said a few days ago that we would sign more than 30.
Also, the way we can do this is by back counting EE's to count for last year I think. We will probably grey shirt 1 or 2, so they will count towards next years class.

Rivals only counts the top 20 recruits for each teams class. So our numbers do not effect the ranking we are really the number 2 class in the nation.

POA already pointed out a very key point, germane to your question. Rivals only counts the top 20 players from any given class for its rankings.

You ask two questions. First, the rating services assign a qualitive number to each recruit. Those added together give the school's total. It's from that total where the rankings come from. I think each rating service has their own method of how many recruits are included.

Second, CBJ has stated on more than one occasion that the class could be as high as 35. The first 25 come from the normal 25 per year limit. The next 5 come from back counts to last year. The next 5 are from a method as yet announced. Most believe they will come from either grey-shirting or blue-shirting. Others have speculated that the additional 5 might come as walk-ons, pay their way the first semester or year, and then get scholys. At this point, it is just a wait and see issue. These would all count against the 2015 class.

If CBJ gets a couple more quality recruits to commit, I'm sure he will find a way. Hoping to see Jackson, another RB, and a DT.

We will try to sign 35. There is a loophole where if you get your FA papers in before Jan it doesn't count against your numbers. That is why Butch was getting some of these guys to get their FA paperwork done early.

Essentially he is using that loophole to get the numbers he needs. I am guessing we will lose one more recruit and sign 2-3 more and be at 34-35 this year and 20-22 next year.

Their are so many mitigating factors affecting our class size , it's all confusing to me. Guess Butch will sign as many as rules allow. Basic posts are welcomed here! :hi:

The dates are critical, because the SEC bylaw collides with a new NCAA rules interpretation that impacted this recruiting cycle. Academically eligible student-athletes who plan to enroll early (in January) are now allowed to sign aid agreements with universities as early as Aug. 1.

Tennessee had a flood of players sign aid agreements last month — perhaps a half-dozen players or more. Why is this significant? By the letter of the law, those players wouldn’t count against the SEC’s signing limit. They’re freebies, if you will.

Now, make no mistake: This loophole, if it’s real, doesn’t affect the scholarship limitations. But it would give Tennessee more flexibility than teams that haven’t yet discovered the loophole.

For example, let’s say five players sign aid agreements before Dec. 1, 2013, and enroll at UT in January.

UT can count back at least five scholarships against 2013 because that year’s class was under the 25-man limit. So that’s now 10 that wouldn’t count against the SEC signing limit.

Jones has said he wants to welcome 14 mid-year enrollees in January. If the Vols were able take 10 of those players “off the books” for the purposes of the SEC signing rule, they could sign another 21 players to traditional Letters of Intent in February.

Grand total? 35.
