How does a Cuonzo get a job at UT .. Who at UT can stand up and be responsible for all of the screwups in the Athletic department. Is this just an example of to much wealth in the college ranks ? A lot of people forget the situation Tennessee was in before he took the job. We had a massive black cloud hanging over our university with pending sanctions. Then you got this ex NBA player who had a great college career, had MO State heading in the right direction, born and raised in a decent recruiting hot bed, from the Keady tree and even beat cancer...wanting to coach here. I don't fault Hamilton at all. I am thankful he tried to right the ship but he's in over his head and its obvious. He seems to be a man of great character but needs more time to develop. UT is too good of a program to let someone learn on the job. I don't want him coaching our Vols and when he's fired, I hope he lands another mid major gig.

Martin got the job because the athletic director either didn't like any of the coaches that were interested in the U.T. job OR the athletic director wasn't willing to pay them their true value, so they declined OR coaches weren't really interested, even though we were interested in them.

So, by process of elimination, we got Martin!!!!!!!!! Other than winning, he is a good coach........ Not meant to be a funny statement but it is true, other than his win/loss record, he is a good coach.

No proven coach would have taken this job at that time. No up and coming "already in the tourney" guy like Shaka Smart would have taken the job at that time. Money was a non-factor.

How did Coach Martin get a job at UT? The previous coach F'd up and left an NCAA cloud hanging over the job.

This is not true. This wasn't true for football, and it isn't true for basketball. Bill O'Brien took the Penn State job after the Sandusky garbage. Coaches will follow the money. UT pays on the cheap and brings in scrubs.

If UT would have offered the right money, they could've gotten the right guy.

I think you may over estimate... (A.) UT Basketball's place in the basketball world and (B.) the financial situation UT was likely in at the time of Martin's hiring and finally( C.) UNDER estimate the uncertainty of the sanctions the NCAA might levy against the program.

Noted. Those are valid points. I just think that everyone knows UT hires on the cheap. It seems that they just found a cheap, safe stopgap.

I don't think anyone was banging down the door for the job, certainly not an O'Brien type guy with 29 years of college and NFL experience.

I don't disagree regarding UT's seemingly "normal approach"...in this instance I think Hammy's hands were tied. Gregg Marshall wouldn't have taken this job if you paid him the most money in college basketball history.

They did contact Jay Wright of Villanova but he let it be known right away that he wasn't interested and I don't think it reached the point of an offer. The same can probably be said of other coaches as well (Jamie Dixon?)...I would have to think a mid-major coach with such little experience and no NCAA Tournament appearances would be way down on the list of choices but it is consistent with some other hires made while Mike Hamilton was AD (Kiffin, Dooley, Raleigh).

Good thing it won't be Hamilton making the hire

I should have said, Marshall wouldn't have taken the job "At that time"...who knows what the future holds Wylo, I appreciate the civility, really, thanks.

I would say good person and average coach. But it's not worth arguing. Just my opinion.

None of those guys were going to leave their current jobs for UT.....

If CCM is gone after this season, I think he would probably be an assistant coach somewhere next year.

Hart hit a home run with CBJ, I think he will do the same for basketball. There is more than one coach out there that can take us to the top;)

How we ended up with CCM

Business minded AD with no clue how to evaluate coaches potential at any level.

Dooley and Kiffin out negotiated him..
