The players adjust what they are doing to win their matchups too. We seem to be in better shape this year vs last year and it's paying off in the 2nd half.

I don't know if the Florida players knew what we had is store for them, either way they weren't ready for the grind.

Time for the Vols to get to work and not squander this win, build on it and move on to Ga.

As for me I'm gonna celebrate this win for a long while.

I didn't think our D played that bad the first half against FL. We played aggressively with DB blitzes and left corners in one on one on the outside and the toasted us on two plays. Then on 3rd TD they caught us in another blitz and throw a screen to that side.

But the fact is our D would have played much better if we would have punched the two 1st and Goal possessions in. As soon as the offense started clicking the D did the same thing.

In the first half our tackling and recognition was putrid. We were bouncing off their running backs and slapping at receivers. Second half, they hit you and you went down. Fundamental 180. Hope the second half arc is the norm from here on out...because they match up to anyone.

I think some of it has to with him figuring out the snap count and communicating it to his players at halftime. Dude is super smart, you can see it in his eyes. He's an intensely analytic person.

You could say the same about Debord.
Hes essentially got the same players but cant get it to click until late second quarter early second half.

Part of it is strategic. Plays like Jennings's sluggo don't work in the second half if they aren't set up in the first. But the other problem is just poor execution out of the gate, and that happens on both sides of the ball. We had the same amount of red zone trips as they did in the first half but came up with only 3 points.

Both Shoop and the players said after the game that they didn't really make adjustments at halftime. They just went out and played better.

regarding debords playcalling, he set some things up with vtech and ohio. that predictable swing pass to kamara that made us all groan last week, set up hurds wheel route td as the linebacker stepped up for kamara and let hurd go. also everytime we went 4 or 5 wide, empty backfield against ohio it was a qb draw, the few times we did it against florida it was a pass--with time to throw... have to think florida scouted and held gaps vs. typical pass rush. chess not checkers. don't love the 100% love his playcalling, but he has his moments.

Shoop a doop and DeBord remind me of superior athletes playing against athletes of lesser abilities. They tend to spot their opponents and rally late and take command.

If I were a younger man, my heart could better manage his kind of abuse!!

I would say it has more to do with teams creating a game plan that is effective for one half and then CBS adjusts his defense to disrupt their game plan and other offensive coaches simply can't adapt in the second half. He probably starts off very vanilla to see what other coaches are planning on implementing and he is very good at adjusting.

He's actually pretty aggressive throwing multiple blitzes at them throughout the beginning of the game.

A corner blitz that burnt us against Virginia Tech comes to mind. Cam Sutton blitzed as the QB rolled out to his side and threw over him for the touchdown.

they just needed a potty break I guess...got some real good land in Florida for sale...little swampy, but who cares, and by the way...there's a bridge on it too...:eek:lol:

GO VOLS!

Both VaTech and Florida had practically unseen QBs that Shoop had little if any film to break down. UF did a great job early with late shifts and quick snaps where the defense had little or no time to react. They also had three big pass plays that set up their 3 TDs. in the first half.

Credit the DL for taking that game over. Nothing was working or gonna work with that much Smokey Gray in the gator backfield in the second half....

Defense plays more vanilla 1st half, and like a sledge hammer the 2nd

I think he give players the confidence to play>>how many thought Jumper was a stud at middle LB>>got to say that pass breakup for a LB was the best Ive seen all year.

I think the hardest job Shoop will have this year is aTm. No weak spot on their Offense.

Offensively I would think long drives to keep their offense on the bench and on D, pressure, and lots of it. Problem is long drives are gonna be hard to come by on Chief's D and pressure not reaching home will get us burned with that recv core and qb runs.

I hope Shoop can shut UGA down cause I don't think they can stop our offense. UGA is still dangerous so I wouldn't take them lightly but aTm and Bama will really show what Shoop can do. aTm may be better than Bama IMO.

so good with the 2nd half adjustments yet the D continues to start so slowly each game? Pregame planning can't be more difficult than on the fly adjustments during the game? I can't arrive at a reasonable explanation as to why the D struggles out of the gate.

Alot of it has to do with new situations. They played well vd app state and ohio for the most part. With Virginia Tech new offense, HC, OC, QB etc. Florida was new QB. Took a bit to figure out their game plan. Once Shoop started oicking up of Floridas pattern for play calls he was able to mostly shut them down.

The defense has been pretty good. The offense has been inconsistent. Now that sec play has begun I guess they'll open it up. They seem to save things for the good teams. But when the offense isn't moving or scoring it's hard to keep the defense up. The entire team effects each other. I like our defense. But they are slow starters.

We've seen the "Rope-a-Dope". Dare we say the Shoop & Dupe???

I've heard this "rope a dope" explanation thrown around several times to explain our style and it's a perfect description. It's dead on. We are basically Ali as a team on a football field. We just keep grinding them down. Eventually they got no fight left.

During the Florida game CBS showed Shoop and Debord sitting next to each other. Shoop is obviously great with defensive adjustments. Is there any possibilities that Shoop is picking up on the opposing teams defensive tendencies as well? And passing that over to Debord for play calling purposes. That might explain some of the offensive adjustments this year as well.

except we were doing the same things last year. It's just who we are. We wear out our opponents and outlast them. That's the game.

My guess is that a big part of his plan revolves around the depth on the defensive line the TN has. Let the D-line beat the opposing o-line into submission and then take over.

Shoop has commented that he has to get a feel for the game before he can get in play calling mode. This has been evident in our first 4 games. It is apparent once he has gotten his head wrapped around what the offense is doing, he is very good at shutting them down.
