Playoff

Can't find it right now, but I saw an article with a couple of scenarios.
1) Tennessee looses to Bama, beats UGA, beats Bama in the SECCG - definitely in the CFP
2) UT beats Bama, looses to UGA, UGA beats Bama in SECCG - highly considered with the Bama win

In any scenario, our destiny with regards to the CFP lies in beating either Bama or UGA or both...I prefer both.

Hayes: Is Tennessee really a Playoff contender? We’re about to find out. Even if we lose to LSU If we beat Bama next weekend then def we are.

I want to believe we are playoff material. I also think we're puffing ourselves up too early. This is the SEC. A Bama team can steam roll other teams, turn around and lose to TAMU. A Georgia can curb stomp opponents, then turn around and lose to USCe or stump their toe on a Kentucky. So I say, unless we win, at the very least, the SECEC, hold off on the playoff talk. This is the SEC, loose talk can lose games.

One game at a time fellas. Take care of the business before you and good things can happen. Getting to the SEC (winning the East) should be the main goal every year. When you do that all sorts of doors open up. Any discussion past that is really premature.

Most importantly though….not making the playoff does not tarnish 9 or 10 wins as an unsuccessful year. Let’s be happy climbing this ladder.

Not a contender until this team beats Bama or UGA and still has path to playoff after winning that game...

It’s all right out in front of us. Yes we are probaly going 10-2 or 9-3 more than likely but we got the potential to make things very interesting in the SEC and playoff discussion. I’m seeing some similarities between us and that 2010 Auburn national title team. If we get thru October with just one loss then we are barreling toward a winner takes all in the East showdown with Georgia and who knows what might happen then. Pressure would be all on Georgia.

How about this:

We beat LSU, beat Bama, lose to UGA but otherwise win out. UGA and BAMA in SECCG. They both whoop up on each other, but Georgia wins it. We go to playoffs with UGA, OSU, and Clemson/Michigan/take your pick.

I'm an optimist. Always have been. But I don't see this defense being good enough to do better than 10-2. The secondary has to get better...and it will....but I think that's next year.

That is my hope...beat LSU and Kentucky and finish 10-2. I know that's not what some want to hear, but that gets Tennessee into a New Year's 6 Bowl and, man, what a ball of momentum that would create. Imagine winning the Sugar Bowl over someone like Oklahoma State, finishing 11-2 in just Heupel's 2nd season, closing out a top 10 recruiting class (which that kind of success would almost certainly lead to), and go into 2023 with an improved defense, more overall talent and experience, and a feeling that we can absolutely compete for an SEC title.

10-2/11-2 is plenty optimistic. The odds of us finishing the season at 10-2 are equal to our finishing 8-4. The odds of us going to the CFP are absurdly low. It takes depth and balance to get through a conference like ours. We should dance on the roof if we only lose two games. That would be overachieving by 2-3 games over preseason odds.

OP had us losing to Pitt, and Florida, he trolls hard.
Well I was wrong. I def thought we would lose to one of them, my expectations have been reset. In August I had us going 8-4 or even 7-5 they are better than I thought and some teams are worse than I thought as well like South Carolina. Heupel has done a great job so far.
