Playing safe means you're playing scared

It was like a 30 something yarder before the penalty. It was a good call to settle for the FG. Where we got too conservative is running the ball 3 straight times after we got the fumble and settled for 3 instead of making it a two score game.

Lol 42 yards is no chip shot.... you ever tried to kick one?
For these kids nowadays, it really is. They all go to kicking camps and you’d be surprised how far they can kick it.

Factoring in the circumstance is a different matter. He had just made from 48 to put the Vols up by 8. The distance wasn’t the issue.

Possibly not kicking it straight on instead of pushing it! Move the ball to the middle of the field on 3rd down!
We were going to but we had a false start. Don’t run the 2 previous to the left hash if you want the ball in the middle for your kicker.

I agree with op, this loss is on coaches and conservative play calling. And for the person that said we are young, so what, put your foot on their throat when you have the chance and finally win
Kirby was conservative for the most part and it worked. It's almost as if 5* talent outplayed 4* talent.

It's amazing to me that we have rightly complained about Heupels offense against Georgia. Dude scores 38 with tons of yards and big plays...

But hey there's that 1 or 2 drives where we just deem him a total loser anyway.

Obviously no right footed kicker ever wants to kick from the left hash, especially in college with the wider hash marks.

Get Joey's ass under center, hike the ball, move the ball 2 steps to the right in center of field, take knee, and call a t.o. Then kick from the center of field. Vols win and we are all happy.

The Ga Tech kicker ran on to the field as time was expiring with no time outs and nailed a 55 yard bomb to beat Clemson. Playmaking...they have it.

Great offense most of the game but he shut down near the end of the game "hoping" to win with a field goal when there was still penty of time to try for a TD or get much closer. That's playing it safe and not giving the offense a chance to do better. Naturally jmho.
He does it way too often. Just thought he'd finally overcome that. Hoping he learns

That’s what CJH tried to do the play before with the fall start. I’m sure that made him second-guess calling another play. My problem is why get so conservative the two plays before. And of course, the conservative play calling after the turnover.

Kirby played to his teams strength. I haven’t seen anyone say coach is a total
Loser but he blew this one being conservative. I’d be willing to bet he learned a lesson whether he admits it or not. Plus you say Kirby played conservative but he scored 44 points.

Yes, let's blame it on the youth and not Banks nor Martinez for leaving #4 in the secondary the whole game when all he did was committ PIs and get beat like he stole something! That wasn't the total issue. But, it was a huge part of it, NOT THE YOUTH!!!
I know he was the only guy they thought could do the job but man, they basically scored almost all their points off his mistakes.

For everyone blaming the kicker do you blame the QB when he misses an open WR throwing high or behind him? How many things do you do perfectly everytime.

Yes, I was commenting on a poster who said all the youth cost us the game. Yes, not having UTs two starting CBs and playing #4 and whoever else that played was a big part of the loss. Yes, #4 is young/youth. But, damn, there are 90 plus players on the team. Surely, UT had someone else that wasn't a freshman that could have not got beaten like he stole something from Gunner!!!

I saw the prior play. Don't be scared, chew out your OL, and tell them all they have to do is wait until the ball is snapped and stand in front of the DL long enough for Joey to get to the middle of the field for the FG AGAIN!!!

Play calling people are complaining about had us up 8 late on the 4th. Don’t give up the damn lead 5 times after you score:
You are correct. But, don't play for the FG and run the ball up the middle three times in a row the second to the last possesion of regulation! At least, take one deep shot for a possible TD or a PI. If that happens, the game is DEFINITELY OVER! PLAY TO WIN not to HOLD ON TO THE LEAD AND HOPE YOU DON'T GO INTO OT!!! Everyone knew what was going to happen when UT went into OT!!! UGA had the momentum again and a short field to defend. That is Kirby's forte!

Coach "shut down" the entire 2nd quarter.
