players whining at 5:30 am workouts

hey guys, here is some information i heard from a guy i know who works with the football team and has to attend those 5:30 am workouts.

last week, three walk-ons showed up late to the workouts. CLK told them "don't come back".

also, apparently lennon creer has been having some trouble at the workouts and has been whining about it. the strength and conditioning coach told him "if you quit (the workouts) then you're quitting on your entire team." and "if you want to quit, go sit in the locker room".

he also mentioned that brandon warren has been a little whinny about the workouts.

i know it's not much, but i thought it was interesting.

Guess they're learning what it really means to "work like heck" :)

hahahahahhaha the funniest thing in this thread is how many people thought Voldad's comment was serious

How much of this is actually going to translate into something versus how much of it is CLK merely envisioning himself as some sort of made-for-tv Coach Carter?

I have to admit LG, other than being a gator, the post you make usually are done with some thought. This one however, not so much. Not one of your better post.

Basically Kiffin is a hard worker and he expects the same from his players. He is finding out who fits his system and the way he does things and who does not. I had heard he did the same thing at Oakland. Obviously that doesn't work so well in the pros where you have these spoiled players that make more than the coaches. Apparently they whined and he had to tone it down. I think this is just how he is, and I believe it will show on the field come September.

We may lose a few more, but the ones who stay will be a lean, mean, fighting machine!

This program has had such a lack of discipline for so long it's a great change. So far he's been the opposite of Fulmer and that's why most people around here love it.

Ok, now see that's a valid point that I had not considered. (I deleted your comment at the end as not productive to our conversation). I think that makes a lot of sense and it will probably work.

Nobody has more 4- and 5-star prima donnas on the roster than USC. If they can get up and work out at 5:30, then so can Creer and Warren and the rest.

It all depends on whether they just want to be known as great players or actually BE great players.

I don't think its really a question of what others do so much as what the coaches think is necessary to instill the right attitude, demeanor and the right work ethic. Which as has been pointed out to me is something welcome at UT right now.

YES there is a real payoff. Working out early in the morning, makes your metabolism work harder and more efficiently throughout the day. This is especially true if its before breakfast (which I am assuming it is). If you look at what our strength coach did at USCe he knows what he is doing.

Another valid point.

Look at it this way,

5:30 am workouts = too tired to screw up after 5:30 pm

Yet another valid point.

For what its worth, which probably isn't much, you have convicned me and I have changed my mind on this and think its a good idea with very little downside. Thumbs up to Kiffin and staff for instituting it.

First, I am aware that other schoold have a.m. workouts. I really do not know how common 5:30 is, though. And it would seem its uncommon since so many folks on here want to give Kiffin an atta' boy for it.

Second, if he had one at 4 in the morning people would think its absurd, no matter how much Kiffin might relish "breaking 'em down and building 'em back up." So, to me, its a perfectly legitimate question to ask as to whether there is a real payoff here for this exercise (no pun intended).

Or is it just some sort of flexing of CLK's muscle (no pun intended) to show the team who's boss?

Perhaps it's a method of quickly discovering which players are truly committed and dedicated. Lord knows that Fulmer never tested these players' dedication.

Hopefully I'm correctly reading sarcasm into your post because surely you aren't trying to be serious.

Yeah, and how many BCS bowls and Heisman trophy winners have they had in the past few years?? Prima donnas maybe a stretch.

I wasn't clear; maybe I should have put "prima donnas" in quotes or something. What I meant was this: Carroll is bringing in the highest-rated guys in the country -- exactly the kind of players whom you'd expect to be prima donnas and take things for granted -- and he's got them all working out at 5:30 AM, because he makes them understand that even the highest level of talent isn't going to get there without putting in the work. Our players need to take heed.

I find it really interesting that UT has so many players griping about actually having to work hard for a change. It just goes to show the Fulmerites that even when Fulmer was talking a big game, he NEVER even began to implement the types of changes that are necessary to turn this program around.

He may talk about "working like heck" all the time, but Fulmer doesn't even know what it means to "work like heck". Now, his former players ARE learning what that phrase really means.
