Agree . I'm getting tired of people like me who scratch together a modest existence, being told how we should bow and kiss the feet of these great people who grace us with their very presence. Tired of being called ignorant and told " I'm getting what I deserve" by these POS know nothings. I don't care if they hire a janitor to coach next year, I'll have more respect for them and more than likely they would at least appreciate the chance. The more I hear the happier I am that Martin took his whiny attitude to Cal.So what are the rules for being a fan these days? Is it blind obedience? Tickets cost money and that means the regular season actually counts for something. So when we sucked all the way to a 16-11 record fans are supposed to sit on their hands? CCM was treated to 1.3 mil contract. Sounds like pretty good treatment to me. Sensitivity training and sport don't mix. Get over it.
We have perhaps the best fan base in America for both major sports. We have sucked in both at times for YEARS and still we sit here ranking in the top for attendance in each. These coaches get paid millions to do something that they love and the fans get bent over time and time in regards to what it costs to attend these events and our fan base has not gotten the returns for investment in either sport for awhile save for this last NCAA run after barely qualifying for tournament.
Seems like some folks are downplaying their role in the events today.
There's a world of difference between criticism and what Cuonzo endured.
I don't think anybody left solely because of a petition, although even that's overboard.
It's all the other things that were pretty shocking, like the man's wife getting accosted in public and apparently finding confederate flags in his yard.
That kind of stuff is borderline criminal and will make a man fear for his safety and that of his family.
The guy wasn't a great coach for most of the regular season; but it frequently takes at least 3 years for a new coach to change everything around and make a program his... it looked to me like he finally accomplished that by the time the tourney rolled around.
And, despite the treatment from fans, he still kicked some behind in the tourney; he had every right to throw in the towel after the treatment he'd received, but he didn't do that.
UT fans are entitled to think they deserve better coaching; but it seems like a significant portion of them (14,000 attend games, but over 30,000 signed the petition) don't realize that the way they're going about it is akin to shooting oneself in the foot.
Honestly, what top coach is going to consider UT after watching how Cuonzo was just treated? If UT does manage to attract one, they're likely going to have to spend more money than they otherwise would have because of that fan treatment, and definitely more than that pittance they were paying Martin... $1.3m isn't much for a major university that wants to consider itself one of the big boys.
So if you are constantly disappointed with the product, then stop purchasing tickets! If you constantly got a rash from the laundry detergent you had been using, would you continue to purchase it? It's not rocket science, dude.
This fan base is aware of the recent NCAA sanctions, the coaching turnover (in football at least), and the recent lack of good recruiting, so it should not be a surprise that the teams disappoint. Be upset with the performance all you want, but don't complain about the money you spend on a product that you are fully aware will likely not live up to your expectations.
It's like investing in your happiness with a stock that has had a negative return for the past decade. Be upset with the W-L column all you want, but don't complain about the money you spend to go to a game when you can watch it from the comfort of your living room every week for the cost of cable and an HDTV or listen to it on the radio for free.[/QUOT
Not my point. I wasn't complaining about the money spent. Actually I have been watching from the comfort of my home for some time. The point is there a blame the fans first mentality too often. Some in the media have acted as if that petition was the worst thing since red communism. Wonder if the media and AD that rely on their jobs because of the fan base would rather they complain or just stop going all together? HMMMM....
