The uniform discussion on the nation has beaten beaten, spanked, kicked and abused... So ill just say this. Nike/UnderArmor > adidas. Adidas is boring. From the uniforms to their apparel. Everyone seems to think Nike and Under Armor will totally change everything. NOT TRUE. They can design classic uniforms as well as Unis that look more modern. And if you don't think it'll help recruiting you are naïve. Why do you think players color coordinate their sweatbands, gloves, mouthpieces etc. They wanna look good out there. Now go ahead and lecture me about tradition and how Adidas is better blah blah blah.

id imagine that meeting is a very short one for UT.. DeerPark have you ever gotten to see anything that Adidas has pitched to UT? any of it really cool looking?
Adidas has a design team, they present multiple designs in just about every sport every year. In some sports like volleyball, track and soccer, there are two or three "stock" designs that every Adidas school will wear in their own colors. Nike and Under Armour have the same type of deal for some sports. In others, unique designs are created for each school.
The on-campus Adidas rep meets with the coaching staff to discuss the designs and changes are made per the coach's requests. If a coach has a specific idea or style in mind, they'll meet with either the rep or a designer from the manufacturer will come in to meet in person.
Once the coaching staff has made a selection, someone in the AD has to sign off on the design approval.
For football, Adidas typically brings in an entire team of people each year to meet with the coach and equipment staff to talk about designs for uniforms, sideline gear, etc. Most of the shirts and jackets are the same template for every school (again, just like Nike and UA), but the staff chooses color combos, etc. For the uniforms, they'll bring in some design and technology ideas, different cuts, etc. The coach can adjust the designs then or request something different.
UT has taken the position that the traditional uniforms and helmets that we wear are part of our overall branding and should not be changed. When fans and recruits turn on the television on Saturday, they see our uniform and know that it's Tennessee playing. That's big.
Over the years I've seen some of the design books from time to time for several schools. Ranges from crazy stripes and horn-looking things like what Michigan has on their away jerseys to different stripes like UCLA's or USC's, just in orange and white. They've pitched black uniforms and gray uniforms to several schools in several sports.
Thank you for all the information. Another question, how could they make the orange pants and jerseys match? Is it just because the jerseys are a type of knit or what?
Different materials are the issue. Under normal light, they're the same color. But the pants are a spandex blend with a shiny finish. The old jerseys, before the Techfit had three materials, shiny spandex side panels, "dazzle" shoulders and a mesh body. Each reflected light differently. Add sweat and you've got a whole 'nother set of colors.
Dating back to the 70s the orange jerseys and pants haven't matched for this reason.
The Techfit jerseys are made of a material that appears more "flat" in most lights. Basically, they absorb light instead of reflecting it. It allows for a more true color in all lights, but didn't line up with other uniform elements. It's being addressed.
As I've said before, every school has this same issue. We notice it more because 1) It's OUR team and 2) We have a unique and very light color. Look at North Carolina and you'll see what I mean. Watching replays of the Music City Bowl, their helmet, jersey numbers and pants are all slightly different shades.
Is gray going to be the next big thing?

Deerpark, this sez it all and is the reason I am against adding other colors or changing up the brand. There is no other team in the country that wears our color.

I thought the orange was a shade darker or more red orange during the years that Majors was coach. I went to school during the Battle era and think that we returned to the true orange when Fulmer took over. Is this correct?

You clearly know what you're talking about, but I'm watching the UT vs UNC game on ESPNU right now and the contrast between UNC's colors is NOTHING compared to ours - esp if you compare the color of Dooley's fleece to our player's jerseys...
My statement that you quoted was mainly relating to the differences in the jersey and helmet.
The sweatshirt that Dooley wore for much of last year was something that was several years old, but he preferred its simple design to last year's "busy" adidas sweatshirts and fleece. You're right that it's darker than the jerseys were.

Just saying a poor choice of wording from a guy who hasn't won anything yet either.
