Player Safety Question

I see more players wearing the bobblehead-looking helmet covers over their helmets . . . all LSU players except the QB's were wearing these during the practice pictured below, and I've seen some worn in games. If teams think there's even a possibility these MIGHT enhance player safety, why is it not mandated that all players wear these during practices and games? I would guess it's because football helmets look cool, and this would diminish the coolness.

to me I wonder about the trade offs.

with that extra padding the head is now a bigger target. more hits may equal out less damage per hit.

curious about the weight of those things, if it effects getting their heads turned around, or if it restricts vision any more.

I also kinda doubt they are built to hold up to full blown continuous contact, there is a reason the helmet is a hard shell first. also probably pretty easy to spin around, requiring constant adjustment even without it breaking.

I also think the helmets and extra padding leads to more head injuries. players can lead with their helmet because they have a helmet on. you take away the helmet and they aren't going to lead with their head as much.

They shouldn't be leading with their helmet at all. You tackle with your shoulder and arms, not your head.
