Player’s careers ruined by coaches

The thread on Randall Cobb got me to thinking Hurd and others spoken of who may have had success elsewhere on the field or at other programs. Obviously, we and they will never know for sure but, who are some of our former players you think coaches did wrong?

I still say had Butch put in the I formation, we would have never lost Hurd and, he would have accomplished more.

What about AJ Suggs, Brandon Stewart, Joey Matthews?

Anyone think C. J. Leak and Brent Schaffer got square deals or the players CLK ran off?

Of course, going back to Cobb, position changes worked out for some such as Jason Witten, Dale Carter and, for a short time, James Banks. But, who are some players negatively impacted by coaching decisions?
Hurd wasn’t ruined. I mean Butch lied to him and was an idiot but Jalen would’ve been a draft pick at RB if he had finished the year. Kamara was kept on the bench to keep Jalen on the field.

Joey Matthews is the worst QB to ever start a game at Tennessee in at least the past 60 years. It’s hard to even have a serious conversation if you are going to imply that he is a victim of bad coaching.
The local yahoos thought because he threw for 400 yds vs Jefferson County, he could play, that lucky pass to Cedrick Wilson in the endzone that barely won us the Southern Miss game might be the worst TD pass in Neyland Stadium history

Beat Kansas State in Big 12 Championship game. Two of Tennessee, Kansas State and UCLA were going to get the two BCS Championship Game slots. But KSU and UCLA both lost their last game and that let Florida State back their way in. If all three had won I think computers had KSU and UCLA in and us out. But I may have just made that part up, not sure.
Wouldve been us and Kansas State

Until all of the regular season games are played nobody has won anything yet. So nothing can be "backed" into. You won enough games to make the title game by season's end, or your ass didn't.

Just like the late season losses last year by Ole Miss and others bumped us back into playoff contention. I guess we 'backed' into the playoff last year huh? I don't have much that I hate but that backing in narrative is right up there at the top for me.

Should Eric Locke be on this list?
hell no!!
Locke (and his father) was a basket case before he left (Riverdale) high school.
He could not do Anything for Bama, in the first place.

Fulmer with his OC just about ruined Crompton's career.

Not to mention Greg Gaines getting into Major's doghouse.

My vote for worst QB start in the last 60 years would be Nathan Peterman at Florida. It still makes me shiver when I close my eyes and think about that first half.
There's far too many halves in FL games to make one shiver. How would you differentiate.

I believe the reason UCLA had to play that game was because there was a hurricane that delayed the game from earlier in the year. I believe in the The U doc part 2 Davis said they wouldn't have beat UCLA if they had played in September.

Didnt ruin his career but cost Peyton the Heisman by not playing Jamal in the 97 Florida game. If we had beaten the Gators PM would have been an almost unanimous choice for the Heisman.

Instead Fulmer and Cutcliife played Mark Levine over one of only 7 players to rush for over 2,000 yards in 1 NFL season. Supposedly he didnt know the protection schemes. Well I would assume you would pick up the first player coming through and the first time PM threw a screen to Jamal or handed off on a draw play that would have been the end of the Gator blitz. Have heard Cutcliffe say that was the biggest mistake while OC.

Lewis had more carries than Levine in that game, but less than half the net yards.

Simms wasn’t very good, but at least had some arm talent. I still think it’s a race Matthews and Sterling Henton as far as most limited opening day starters.

I’ll throw in the Jr version of Jonathan Crompton as honorable mention.
I hate that Crompdaddy got a raw deal here with coaches he had like 4 different coordinators at his time here and the fans expectations being so high on him.. I liked how Lane came in and gave the kid confidence

People forget that fans preferred Stewart over Manning their freshman season. Stewart was viewed as being more athletic with perhaps a stronger arm. Everyone knew though that Fulmer had to invest in Manning long term. Stewart did pretty well at A&M - actually did us a favor in 98 by beating another team in contention for the BCS. Can’t remember the team. I was surprised Stewart never made it in the NFL. He was the equivalence of a 5 star HS player.

A. Kamara comes to mind with Butch. He wasted Kamara as a backup who proved how good he was in the NFL. The rumor was Hurd wanted to play TE Butch wouldn't let him so he transferred.
IMO, Butch never came off of having Hurd be the guy because he was the first true big-name recruit he signed, and was an in-state guy. Butch was all about marketing, how things appeared, etc. and I think got it stuck in his head that Hurd had to be his RB, even though Kamara was better both on an absolute basis and in terms of offensive scheme fit.

It was absolute coaching malpractice that Kamara never got starter-level touches until Hurd left the program. There were multiple NFL scouts quoted at the combine saying that they were wondering if there were character concerns that nobody knew about, because none of them could figure out why he didn't play more. If Heupel was coaching this offense in 2016, Kamara would have been in NYC, if not won the Heisman.

What’s bad is that ucla didn’t even have to play it. Miami didn’t want to and gave them an out

He was ruing in the sense that he didn't know how to use the type of players in situations to make them more successful. Run stretch/outside zone with Hurd and then inside zone with Kamara. Passing concepts sucked too. I swear we ran Stick 387,000 times.
