Play Calling WILL Lose Us The Bowl Game

unless something drastically changes on the offensive play calling side of the ball, we will get killed by just about anyone we face.... especially if they are pass happy-- then we get rolled by 50... our secondary can't handle Vandy's scary pass attack much less a Louisville or ND....

Mods can we delete this thread. We don't even know who we are playing and they are already counting it as a loss. This Fanbase makes me sick. A rival actually showed up to play today on rivalry week and people think we suck at football.

I hate to think what people would have said if VN had existed in 1987, 1989, and 1995-97, when Tennessee teams that would have blown this one out came just as close, or closer, to losing to the CommodeOdors.

We're talking about a bowl game. This was their bowl game, and they played their butts off, just like they did in those other seasons, when they weren't very good and UT was loaded with guys who ended up playing on Sundays.

As for the bowl, I'm hearing NC State down in Charlotte. We can take them. They didn't beat anyone who wasn't just plain bad all year until today, when they beat a UNC team that basically laid down for them (the Heels made their season when they beat Duke last week).

Does it matter?

Vandy is 3-9 and had the worst D in the SEC.

We get extra practices but it doesn't look like 4 months of practice hasn't done any good with this OL.

We got the worse ol in tn history imo. Gave up 5-6 sacks to chattanooga. Hurd went out which I think would have made better difference. Thin @ rb

I remember the nail bitters with manning. Ugly boring games. Manning didn't have many yds against them either. Which vandy had good defense but we had weapons. Oh and we had beeetttteeerrrr ol then

For what ever reason, the play calling was horrible tonight. He was calling plays very close to the chest with the "not to lose" mentality. I believe the whole AJ situation has greatly impacted this team negatively, plus injuries are adding up. Hopefully we play better in our bowl game and finish the season strong.
I would give anything for someone to explain this. Your QB was off, WRs weren't doing much, your OL still sucks, Hurd was out... criticize the position coaches if anyone not the calls made.

So we need 15 extra practices for WR screens and jet sweeps

The offensive line is barely holding their blocks for 2 seconds . You need three seconds to develop the top layer routes or long developing crossing routes. Therefore , everything that we do is going to be within 6-8 yards of the line of scrimmage. The defenses we play know this ...and they too are 6 to 8 yards from the line of scrimmage . Since they know we are not able to pass deep , the linebacker are attacking the run gaps with abandon. Bubbles and sweeps are all that we have until the O line can hold for 3 seconds . You can call other plays ...but they just wont work .

This offense is pathetic I hate change but Stripling needs to go along with the OC realize they are a young team but there just isn't hardly any improvement maybe these 15 practices will help it damn sure can't hurt- need a beast of a running back recruit as much as everyone loves Hurd it just isn't there hopefully it will get better with an improve OL

Stripling is the DL coach, Mahoney is the OL

We are not stretching the field whatsoever! The time for us to take downfield shots is on first down when there is SOME chance of it working. We ran ONE fly sweep tonight for an 8 yard gain. We ran two against Missouri for somewhere between 15-20 yards, yet we continue to throw bubble screens for little to no gain time after time, yet we only run the fly sweep 3 times in 2 games? We aren't even attempting to stretch the field vertically or horizontally.

As an expert Turd Polisher, I am yet to see one actually shine... Worst O-Line we have scraped together since I have watched UT Football... People whine we lost this game or that game, I am happy we beat anybody with this "special" group. jmho GBO

Why don't you call plays then? I bet you don't know squat about calling plays...

Dobbs was off his passing game, had a pick and should have had two more. I think the play calling at the end showed a lack of confidence in him by the coaching staff

I believe the OC lost confidence in Dobbs throwing the ball down field. I don't know what they are going to do.

I don't disagree that there was probably a loss in confidence with Dobbs down field passing. So throttle down and try shorter routes, shorter passes. Try some quick outs, shorter slant routes, switch up your run plays and blocking if passing isn't working. Basically if what you're doing isn't working try something else, when that stops working try something else again. Never stop improvising.

I don't know what team you are watching, but the QB has ran for his life all year long, regardless of the name on his jersey. Honestly, the only reason we have done better lately is because the replacement QB has a chance to get away from the Mongolian horde in pursuit...

Hard to throw a quick screen even when the DT is roasting marshmallows in the area formerly known as "the pocket". DT's aren't generally known to be the fastest on the team, and (insert any team we have played 1st, 2nd, and 3rd string DT names here) was neck and neck with the RB to take the hand-off...

I cringe on 3 step drops, what has Dobbs personally done to you to call for him to do a 5-7 step? You realize the receivers have no chance to get down field before he is being wheeled into surgery right?

Play calling will improve as the offensive line improves and gets healthy.

Our WRs will get open as soon as our o line improves, believe it or not, defensive backs can make sacks as well, when your qb can run and has healthy wideouts that have experience and the o line blocks really well, you have a defense that goes from a zone to man coverage.

After the offensive line becomes a well oiled machine , the qb gets more time in which wide receivers get more time , running backs will have holes to run through, the qb can look off safeties, all equals out to an Offensive Coordinator making more elaborate play calls. Not to mention having depth at all 11 offensive positions.
We have a 5 star receiver coming in next year, more offensive linemen(not sure of star ratings) a RB transfer , and a good DT quarter back.
I celebrate every win. Singing rocky top dancing in the living room with my 15 month old son!
A win is a win! And us UT Vols fans are unlike any other!

Sure we will argue and disagree, there will be negavols , I have been one (very briefly until I saw how bad it sucks to be negative towards a football program, then I grew up)

Go Vols !! Beat ______!!!! <insert bowl victim

I don't judge our team based on Vandy. They consistently bring their best game against us every year. Personally, I'd love to play Notre Dame. They are coming off of a 4 game losing streak, a little "student becomes the teacher" aspect for Butch against Kelly and did I mention I can't stand those entitled p****s!

Roller coaster season. It's the consequence of playing with a young team. Let's hope come the end of next month we are at the top of the corkscrew.

The offense for Bama, USClite and Kentucky were different than the one we played against Mizzou and Vandy...The last 2 were very conservative and it got us beat once and almost yesterday...Hard to understand why they don't just keep doing what has been successful....Yes I know players are hurt but the backups still practice the same plays as the starters in practice.

If you fire stripling, the best / most improved unit in our team, hart, butch and the entire staff should go. Atleast know your coaches before you bi|@# about them.

Can't believe you got likes for that! :eek:lol:

Can we all not just be happy for a few days? We just got bowl eligible! vandy always gets up for us! We will be fine!

Coug makes a valid point... there are more plays that can be effective, and Dobbs is capable of making these. Short routes and slants... change it up a little. Seems like the D is feasting on the jet sweep and sideline screens.

Go back and rewatch the game and look at how many downfield passes were off target. He even overthrew a wide open Alex Ellis on a seam route down the middle of the field. When the inconsistency shows up, the playbook becomes very small.

So, you agree with those plays being ran time and time again??

Even though we have seen other types of plays work very effectively but decide to not use them?

When you have no outside deep threat at WR....a beat up / underperforming OL (understatement).....one competent running back....and a defense that is playing reasonably well you run the plays that you execute the best and give you the least likelihood of causing something disastrous.

The first play of the game was a deep shot downfield....picked off. I think the wind was not understood to those watching at home. You could not throw downfield with much accuracy last night.

When all you need is a Win to meet your goal of a bowl game, you do whatever you need to. Sure, everybody would have loved a blowout like the Kentucky game. However, under the circumstances, I have no problem with them taking the air out of the ball and riding the defense.
