Play Calling WILL Lose Us The Bowl Game

Excuses are so easy to make. Responsibility rarely falls on coaching. Especially, on coaches we like. in game coaching is bad, plain and simple.

Sir, how many WR screens did we run? How many strong-side read options did we run, from the same formation, with no deviations at all? There are ways to scheme away from our weaknesses and mixing up the play calling might also mitigate the weaknesses to some degree.

Ok I am listening to your inputs on the plays you would have inserted and to who...

I'm glad we barely beat Vandy but the sad truth is that the play calling and/or lack of plays coming out of the book are not helping our offense. I'm no negavol but unless something changes between now and the bowl game(which it likely won't) we will be losing that bowl game.

Did you ever consider these very basic things? :
1) We have a freshman based offensive line with very little depth
2 ) Dobbs adds a great element with his running , but is a single read QB at best who lacks the ability to diagnose a defense and is an inconsistent passer .
3 ) the OC is calling plays that require execution by the players . To my knowlege , all of the plays called seem to have positive yardage as the goal. If all of the plays called would have been executed well ....we would have scored 50+ points.

a few things to qualify the above points :
- every modern offense , be it power I based or spread concept , requires an effecient passing game to function . Most offenses set their sights on balance. Without a passing game , even the most average defense can control the running game
- Most teams do not play freshmen linemen. Most teams do not have such a rare blend of freshmen and first year starters . O linemen are some of the toughest , and slowest positions to develop. They play opposite of the strongest , fast twitch guys on the field . Out of highschool , big uglies tend to lack the agility to play the position.
- A QB needs 3 seconds to complete a pass , upper layer or deep routes need 3 seconds to develope. We are getting a hair more than 2 seconds on good plays
THERE IS NO MODERN OFFENSE THAT CAN FUNCTION IN THIS CIRCUMSTANCE ! The entire game will be played within 8 yards of the line of scrimmage

Tape the x button on your controller rapidly and see if you can bring these offensive linemen up to speed in the off season

I'm really impressed by your not negavolness. A smarty like you that can see the future. Can you give me some insights as to who will win tomorrow at at Aqueduct Race park? Call me about five minutes before every race. Thank you.

Well, you can play smart ass if you want, maybe it's a role that suits you, I don't know, but my suggestions would at least be a departure from what we've seen called over and over again, ad infinitum, and maybe catch the defense off guard for once.

I miss the days when we didn't talk about the o-line...

Tonight's game was ugly, and it's disappointing that Tennessee was the only team in the SEC to beat Vandy by less than 10. That said, this Vandy team had two wins against UT and had confidence that they could win, and they sold out their whole season on this game. UT has been challenged by bad Vandy teams in the past, but most of them had never beaten UT and didn't have the confidence to do so.

The fact that this Vandy team was in it and we were able to hold them off speaks to the character of this Tennessee team.

What do you expect. Our top RB, C, and most of our WRs are out. When we lost our center as bad as the O-line has been, he was calling out blocking assignments. Lets hope we get a lot of them back and then the play calling will be better. It was fine against Kentucky and S. Carolina. Just saying.

We still ran the same plays. It doesn't matter who's in there. Either way I will be at the bowl game, wearing my orange and rooting for my team. I am ecstatic for our players and us fans, but we will throw behind the line of scrimmage every other play, run a jet sweep the others and not even megatron playing for us will change it. Just facts.

Lets try to have a winning season for once in 5 years.Hopefully we will figure something out on offense before the bowl game.

You should send CBJ all of those plays you have that don't require the offensive line to block. I doubt they have any of those in the playbook.

what plays would you like to run ? Our QB is inconsistent in the passing game ...at best . Our O line can barely hold blocks for 2 seconds ...3 is needed for the upper level routes to develop. So what ever plays will be called must be called within 8 yards of the LOS ...because thats what 2 seconds gets you . Did I mention that the defense knows this and is within ...you guessed it ...8 yards of the LOS ?

So let me get this straight ....everybody is within 8 yards of the LOS because our inexperienced line cannot hold blows for the necessary time. Our QB is erratic passing the ball ...but you know some secret plays that will work . Cant go downtown , no time. Box is crowded , slants and screens are risky . No bubbles or flares , the D is playing downhill . The run gaps are under pressure by the LBS because no one respects us deep ....mmmmmm...I wonder what these majic plays are going to be. Single wing maybe ? Wishbone....nop nope ...you gotta block those too....mmmmmm

I don't think I've ever seen a bunch of fans so unhappy when their team won!? Yada yada yada, but we won!

And last years o-line? Worse results. How many are on a NFL team? Same plays. It is what it is. I am celebrating for everyone, players, fans, taking my son's to a bowl game with ut playing and having an absolutely wonderful weekend. Try to rain on my parade, and I will cheers to your excuses next year. Look forward to it.

I do. What are your expectations for next year?

Last year , our receivers consisted if 2 guys that were running backs the year before , a walk-on and a freshman . Worley was our QB and he was no where near as good as he was this year , Dobbs was not either when he got his chance. We did average 4.5 yards a carry last season running the ball . Our defense was terrible as well , a carry over from the season before which put alot of pressure on our rag tag receivers and inexperienced QB

The things I notice are that that terrible defense has improved to a D playing at a high level . Worley and Dobbs along with the receivers as a unit have drastically improved. I think it stands to reason that the O -line will improve over the off season as well . It also stands to reason that a team with huge gaps in recruiting ( IE Dooley not recruiting an O lineman , inexplicably ) is going to have some developmental issues

I think when the line can hold blocks for 3 seconds , this layered west coast scheme with power running plays will make a bit more sense to you .

The common denominator in the stagnant offense is Dylan Weisman.

Dude is downright horrid. Thanks to injuries he is back in the lineup, and it is showing. If this guy gets another start in orange it will be one too many.

Well....when the opponent (Vandy) takes 3 weeks to prepare for a game they should be able to make it tighter than it should be. No way they prepared for MSU with an open date and then lose 51-0.
