Play calling vs talent

This is a non-starter as an argument. My wife also has not one, but two diplomas with The University of Tennessee printed on them and she couldn’t care less about the football team. I have one degree from UT and two from LSU. Does that mean I’m not as big a fan as you? Should I instead be an LSU fan? I spent way more on tuition at LSU than I did at UT.

What about my son? He absolutely loves the Vols but he doesn’t have a degree yet because he’s 7. Is he not as good of a fan as you?

Just because you paid UT for your degrees doesn’t mean that you are entitled to be more of a fan, or care more than anyone else on the planet.

Well said.

One thing I like about this coach is his play calling. Probably least talented team in a decade but if they learn to execute his plays will be fun.

It does make you look at the talented players we wasted with Butch and cornbread.
Tillman is one of the least heralded players on your offense. And one of the most productive. That’s a sign of player development.

Agree, he’s certainly put the players in the best position to win. Look at the beautiful throw (Hooker) & catch (Payton) 1st possession today. Had similar execution been there in the opening possessions against Pitt we’re an impressive 4-1! It’s early, but it looks like this is the best coaching staff we’ve had in awhile. The big question for me will be, can they recruit? If I’m a talented RB, WR or accurate DT QB I’m seriously looking at TN.

Go VOLS!!!

The good thing is, out society has freedom of choice. Therefore, she has that choice to be a fan or not.

Second point, I was a Tennessee fan long before I attended college, much like your son.

Third thing, and most important, as far as I know, you don’t come on a Tennessee message board and harass other fans and fictitiously claim them to be fans of other schools like ole JP does. Maybe, and just maybe if he was educated in the same system me, you, the Mrs and others he would not be so ignorant and just maybe, not display it or to the level he has.

That related to your last point.
You are the type of person that makes the vast majority of people, little less fans of a team, want to go to a classless society. Your type of elitism drives to fools that want to push us in the wrong direction. I too was a fan long before I attended. Only one for me, but that is enough. You do not need to attend a school to be a fan. Take your two degrees and use the paper to wipe yourself with. Don't bother spewing more drivel, only the ones unfortunate enough to not block you will see it. Stop calling yourself a UT fan. It gives the rest of us a bad reputation.

Isn't Paul Finebaum a UT alum? lol

Guys, not to be a Negavol but, this is a terrible Mizzou team!
Actually i agree with you..

However they arent as bad as Tennessee Tech or Bowling Green. This indicates to that that progress is being made. That is all i ask of this coaching staff.

Well that and getting to a bowl game..😎😎

I wish I knew football better and could gauge talent. If the team does have the amount of talent that some suggest, you have to give the coaches some credit for cobbling together a decent team as it seemed that the Vols led the nation in out transfers.

Fans like you are the reason Fulmer was put back in charge and further destroyed out football program!

If you don’t was Tennessee back as an elite program, then go be a fan of Vandy or somebody else or to use the quote JP used, stfu!

In years past we have allowed the Florida loss to basically end our season due to poor leadership from our coaches. This one feels different. You can tell JH does not like losing. He was a winner as a player and that has carried over to his coaching career. All the great coaches will tell you that you learn more about your team after losses. Are they going to get down on themselves and spiral out of control or are they going to move on to the next team on the schedule? After both losses this year, we have come out and absolutely annihilated our next opponent. I know TN Tech and Missouri are not very good teams but the way they handled their business shows that these kids are buying in and that is a great sign for future success.

You make a good point. I feel Heupel may be doing something Butch and Pruitt might not have been as proficient at: Calling plays that work with the resources (or players) he has available. You can, as a coach, have a set offensive philosophy, but it has to be adjusted to the stengths and weaknesses the players you have on the field have.

Impossible to know if he is the best man for the job yet. But we might as well enjoy the ride right now.

Yeah, they suck.

But you know what good teams do when they play someone who sucks?

They beat their asses by some score like 62-24, that's what. There are going to be other good days and other bad days. We have barely more scholarship players than an FCS team, an NCAA investigation hanging over us, and no proven quarterback, but this was a good day. They were well-prepared and they executed. They are getting better from week to week, which is something we haven't seen much out of Tennessee football in a LONG time.

Agree with everything you said, except about the QB. Hooker has shown that he is a good SEC QB.

Talent and play calling are only 2 of the factors that come into play. Another couple are motivation and passion. I get the sense that these young men really like playing for this coach and really like playing in this system.

Heupel is doing a really nice job considering we have nowhere near the scholarship players of other teams. He’s getting the right guys on the field and getting them in position to make plays. I got my wish this year….I just wanted our guys to look competent and like they understood what was going on around them. We’re outmanned by the big boys, but we can make a run to six, maybe seven wins if these guys play hard and execute. They’re learning. GBO! 🍊

He's looked good but I want to see a little more before I call him a quality SEC quarterback. He had flashes at Virginia Tech, too, but was never consistent. If he keeps it up, it speaks well of the coaching staff.

Phillip said the next HC needs to be in place for ten years to get us out of this mess! I'm on board!!!!

This team doesn’t have any real depth, but the starters are talented enough on offense. Hooker had always had talent, and Rae talent is the only thing Milton seems to have going for him at the moment. The thing is we are playing a lot more transfers regularly and it takes time for them to gel as a team.
We're decent 1 vs 1 . We have no quality depth past the 1's!!!!! = Long season in competitive games!
