Pitiful Defense

Really? You'd resign from a $4.4 million job because the fans are unhappy and critical??
Really?
Seriously?
I can't imagine someone would type out a statement so ridiculous, read it and then hit submit.

You can read can't you ???? You wait until you fire Butch and see how many coaches you go through before anyone will (quality) accept. Nobody would put up with all this BS !!! I am a graduate of Tennessee but Butch Jones has brought this program out of the gloom and dooms. Lots of programs would love to be 8 and 4. How many years did you say it has been since we beat Florida. You do have enough sense to know we beat Florida and Georgia both this year, don't you.

Problems:

DT depth - we have multiple DE playing DT and they get blown off the ball.
LBs - Once the DTs are blown off the ball, Jumper/McDowell leave holes the size of Texas to run through due to poor angles/play recognition
DBs - We commit an extra player to the box, and then you have every white receiver known to man proceed to torch Foreman, Abernathy, Sutton etc...

Plain and simple, injuries hurt the team, but the players just aren't very good. We cannot set the edge to save our lives and we cannot defend a 40 yd bomb.

Ultimately on the coaches, but what is Shoop supposed to do when his "highly" rated players continue to play so terribly. Butch must go.

Injuries are an excuse.
UF went into Death Valley and beat LSU w half their D injured (and played very physical tough D). Scheme and coaching is the overriding issue.......there were NO injuries for the App St game.....could not stop the run, esp up the middle that night. The same out of position poor tackling D from that night was seen in almost every game this season. We played Big12 D all season. Unfortunately, CBJ will resuffle the chairs on the deck on this sinking ship which will result in a less than stellar recruiting class followed by a 6-6 season next year followed by the big brick being removed from this poorly built wall.

Then we start over.....again!!

I'm too old for this sh*t!

Most fans should do what you are doing and lower our expectations. It makes things easier being an apologist

That's funny..

I saw Mosley and Forman play last night... along with berry and Kongbo

Moseley was a project that's not worked out, and Foreman was a QB in high school. Tells me how Butch fails at recruiting when you see them starting

Total yards:
App State: 292
VT: 400
Ohio: 318
Florida: 402
Georgia: 392
TAMU: 592
Alabama: 594
SC: 325
TN Tech: 224
Kentucky: 635
Mizz: 740
Vandy: 608

Yep, injuries has nothing to do with it.

Dude you and some other thick skulls need to quit this narrative. Nobody is saying the injuries had nothing to do with it. They're saying the injuries didn't have as big of an impact as some are suggesting.

Sutton and Kirkland are back and we are giving up passing yards now instead of rushing yards alone. Our 3rd string guys would be fighting for playing time at Vandy.

Aside from the injuries you can keep ignoring that even with all the starters we were constantly out of position, missing tackles, not turning the head on passes, can't get of the field on 3rd down, fell behind in every game, etc etc etc.

Sorry you don't want to look at reality and realize this staff is crumbling before our eyes and the future isn't nearly as bright as we all thought at the start of the season.

This could be the start (or continuation depending on ones perspective) of some more ugly years. Losing that game really hurt. In more ways than one.

I don't understand how we could give up so many passing yards last night as at least three of our DBs were regulars, no? Losing Kelly hurt--shows we have no depth at safety. We need some ball hawks at safety.

I'm not making excuses, the defense has been beyond bad, but nobody can play defense in college football anymore. EVERYBODY is putting up 30/40/50 points regularly. It's a game dominated by offense nowadays.

In reality the Vols may be lucky to win 4-5 games in 2017, not much momentum going forward for Butch Jones and his champions for life.
Will the Vols spend a couple of years in purgatory prior to a coaching change, is perhaps a better question, no?

It really seems that every year since Butch has been here, we have lacked in skilled linebackers. We always seem to have one good lb each year and that is it. We have too many gaps and like one other poster says, they always seem to be out of position. When we play a 4-2 or even a 5-2, our second level of defense seems to be way downfield and we give up 15 -20 yard runs frequently. JMO. Bad coaching and too many 3 *'s

Yes,and lost to candy and sce,two teams that we should have owned. As has been mentioned, something is wrong on this team, and Butch either won't or can't get it fixed. Defensive play was not good to start the year and has regressed to a pitiful level. And when you're playing for a chance at the Sugar Bowl, you shouldn't play like you thought it was Tidy Bowl.

Injuries period.

According to some people every problem we have can be based on injuries and only injuries, like if it wasn't for the injuries we would be undefeated and headed to Atlanta or something. Yes we have been ravaged by injuries this season, but that is just one of the many problems and issues that plague our program. The injury issue has provided a convenient hole in the sand for everyone to gladly stick their heads into and ignore everything else. You cant play as poorly as we have played this season week after week and not expect some people to be held accountable for it.

I have enough sense to weigh the pros and cons. UT lost to two teams who have losing records in conference play. Statisticamly, it is the worst defense in UT history.

Any decwnt coach with a lick of sense could have improved UT. Dooley lowered the bar and makes 8-4 look good. What I do see is a coach that has become the butt end of jokes in the national media.

So, saying Butch would just leave because of fan criticism is bat **** crazy. UT fans are not an anomaly. Bama fans sent death threats to a coach that had a much better record than Butch Jones. UGA fired a coach with a much better record than Butch could dream of. It's utterly preposterous and weak minded.

Read a physics book. 250 pounds can't stop 300 pounds. We've got DEs playing DT because 4 of the top 5 DTs are out. Their job is also to keep blockers off the linebackers. Kirkland looked like an All-American last year and early this year. Last night he had 2 tackles, as did Jumper. Kirkland didn't forget how to run and tackle during the season. The entire defense is dependent upon the play of the DTs. When they can't make the plays, the safeties have to come up, that opens passing lanes.

It's like having Brooks Robinson at 3B and Lou Gehrig at 1B and me playing short stop. You'd still have a lousy defense.

Shoop didn't forget how to coach defense during the year. It's the injuries.

Tennessee had a much better defense under Justin Wilcox, ranked #37 I believe, than under any DC they've had since Fulmer's time as HC. The talent level was not as good as they had this year.

I believe Tennessee could have suited up some local high school players with no coaching and played better defense. I just kept saying, "How can they be so bad?" This has been the most frustrating year in 45 years of watching Tennessee football. Even some of the losing seasons were more fun to watch.
