Majors needed him to play, but Carl had been told he could redshirt. When Majors tried to force him to play, Pickens packed up and went home. Majors gave in. Worley seems like a class kid. I don't foresee him standing up to Doolander.

Where did you read that Worley is giving up his redshirt to backup Simms?
Hopefully if Simms doesn't get hurt we won't need him.

If we're talking about Worley here I sincerely hope he does redshirt. I'd rather Nance back up Simms this year and save Worley's extra year to learn and mature. We wouldn't win many games but.... eh.... n/m. If it means a loss to Kentucky burn that thing and let Worley play.

I think Worley can be a back up and still keep his redshirt only if he doesn't go into the game and play a down.

They may have to burn his redshirt. They may not have a choice during this stretch of games.

You know how sometimes on Facebook someone will post a reply to, say, a private message as a status by mistake? I feel like this is something like that.

Whether it is relevant to the current situation or not, it is an interesting story. Lets not forget that Pickens was one of the last to play both ways for us, playing both Safety and Wide Out in 1989, and he was an academic All American. In other words, he was very talented but also very smart and knew what it would take for him to contribute to the team.

The most interesting thing I take from the story is that our coaches preached you get better in practice, not in games. Pickens wanted a full redshirt year to get better so he would be the best he could be when he played. When I think about our running game, it seems our O Line didn't get that time to develop in practice so we are seeing them try to develop during the games.

How good is Tennessee receiver Carl Pickens? Just ask him - 08.26.91 - SI Vault

And a clip to get us all excited about playing LSU. . .

The only way I'd burn Worley's redshirt is if it was the difference between bowl eligibility or sitting at home. But, hey, I'm not the coach.

I'm not a huge Simms fan, but I have to admit he's a tough kid who took a beating last year. Hopefully he doesn't have to take a beating this year, but if he does he should be able to hold up. Why not try Nance as backup? If we end up having to play a 3rd string QB why not give a guy a shot who will most likely never get one with us again?

He nearly got us a vctory last year at their place. I hope he has the best game of his career this weekend, followed up by another career setting day next week.

Tennessee Football is far more important than Worley's Redshirt year!! If it requires Worley to play aganist LSU, Alabama, South Carolina, or any other team this year then so be it. Hopefully Worley is a team player and is preparing hard to be ready to go in THIS YEAR if necessary. You know playing this year will make him better than a redshirt year. I bet you all would love it if Matt got slightly injured and Worley had to come in for ONE play!!! Wouldn't that be great. You all could have a field day criticizing Dooley.

Most of you on VolNation are so negative about the Vols, Dooley, Simms I question whether you are true fans. You negavols remind me more and more of the MTV generation Gator fans. They had nothing before Spurrier, they are classless, clueless, and any other negative adjective you want to put in front of GATORS.

I would not want to depend on any of you in a crisis, I'm sure the first sign of danger you would run to Mommy. At least Dooley hasn't given up and he never will.

Fulmer let this program slide his last 4 years or so. LameKitten is nothing but trash and he trashed the program further. He recruited criminals, babies, and most are now gone. While I'm on Kitten, his only year here was so called successful due to Fulmer's leftovers not his players. But he beat NO ONE that he was suppose to beat and lost to at least two teams he was favored in. I am so glad he and his overrated DAD are gone. His daddy has one of the worst defenses in the no-defense PAC12.

I'm so glad Dooley is Tennessee's coach and he WILL BE SUCCESSFUL!!!

Lighten up a bit Francis. Sh*t has took a turn for the worse this season and everybody is a little frustrated. No team or its fans likes going through this crap. If you expect everyone to be happy when sh*t has clearly struck the fan, then you need to think a little more clearly. The only way i wont support Dooley is if next season is a complete fail.

Hey, Francis things have not taken a turn for the worse. The recruiting is good, the defense is light years better than last years, the offense is better (Running game no clue as to why this is horrible.).

Losing to Georgia was awful. I live in GA and those fair weather fans are hard to live with when they win.

Mainly, this Francis is saying -- Never give up, LSU may be the biggest upset of the season, STOP the crap about DOOLEY needs to go.

Who do you have on the sidelines to backup Simms? Worley is the best QB off the bench in that scenario. If you let Worley practice as the back-up then he needs to be ready to go in if Simms gets hurt. You just hope he doesn't and burn the redshirt. I think that's the way you have to go.

We've lost our best receiver and our starting QB. We lost to UGA, a game we had to win with LSU, Bama, and SC coming up. Id say it has taken a turn for the worse. Not doubting the recruiting, it's obvious we are doing well in that category.
