It takes years to rebuilt an entire staff.
And I don't think we're in the position to be recruiting the best of the best right now, given how many more attractive vacancies will be around within the next year. We don't want a coach from a second-rate program. We need someone who's either ex-NFL or currently coaches at a top 5 program. Given the state of affairs in our program, neither is likely to happen.
I'd say we'd line up behind FSU and Michigan for sure. And potentially Arkansas, a program that has been far more exciting and productive than ours in the last couple of years.
Let's face it. We're looked at as a vestige of college football. A program that has had its years and is ready to die. On top of that, we have a spoiled fan base, our share of NCAA scandals, kids that get arrested all the time, and a very demanding AD.
We can't just have anybody. And the caliber of coach we need will not come to Tennessee.
It's one thing to go in on a job like Meyer did and pick up the reins to a program that has more talent than any other in the SEC and that has flourished for at least 20 years. It's entirely another to go in on a program that's lived on nothing more than memories and pride for the last 10.
Over the past two years we have won just as many games as Arkansas. They won four games in 2005. Tennessee is not looking like it is ready to die, and if you think that you are sorely mistaken. EVERY major football school has had their down years. Nebraska, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Alabama, FSU. Every single one. Oh and By the way Ron Zook did not have the Florida program prospering, at all. Just in case you thought he did.
Which even further debunks the myth that Gruden, despite having little to no say in personnel matters, just got up one morning and decided to dismantle that team. He pushed an aging, limited team over an obstacle Dungy couldn't. That's the truth of the matter. For everyone who thinks Gruden can't coach, here's a little project. Look at the four years prior to his arrival in Oakland and the four years following his departure from Raider Nation compared to his tenure in the Bay. See what that tells you.
Assuming there is an opening, here are my 10 candidates in order of personal preference. I preface this by saying I don't think Gruden appears to be a likely option:
1. Jon Gruden.
2. Gary Patterson.
3. Steve Sarkisian.
4. Jim Leavitt.
5. Jim Haslett.
6. Bronco Mendenhall.
7. Brent Venables.
8. Bo Pellini.
9. Jim Mora, Jr.
10. Charlie Strong.
Chavis is overrated. Defense has been giving up big plays in crucial/crunch times for years. Even in years when the defense looked good statistically, it gave up too many big plays at the wrong times. Everyone acts like Cut and Chavis are the greatest coordinators of all time. Tennessee has had better. To call them amazing is quite an overstatement. With the kind of talent Tennessee recruits, saying it would take another coaching staff "years" to get to an 8-5 is pretty ridiculous and downright naive. If the talent level doesn't drop off, I could see a new coaching staff doing better than 8-5 quite easily. I don't agree with any of your post, except Fulmer being a great recruiter. The other part is just flat-out wrong...no disrespect
