Phillips ahead of Vols' more touted freshman linemen

Curt has put on some size that I think would limit his effectiveness at a true MLB position. I could be wrong in that assessment though.

Pretty sure Curt has slimmed down some. Looks like he has anyway. But, allows us to backfill with Kyle when we move Curt to Outside Linebacker on some plays without losing much pass rush, if any at all! I've liked Kyle since he committed, gonna be a beast!

After the show he put on at that game, hard to believe he has been overshadowed. But he really has. He was a beast in that game. I hope he has used being overlooked as motivation because all the media seems to be focused on is Shy/Kmac. We may have all 3 on the all- Freshman team.

I don't agree that Phillips was overlooked or overshadowed. He came in as an early enrollee, but missed spring practice due to recovering from an injury he got during his Senior season of HS. Had he been able to participate in the spring, the false assumption Phillips was overlooked wouldn't even be mentioned.

The only reason McKenzie and Tuttle seem to get more attention is based on a perceived greater need at DT.

As to who make the all-freshman team, guess we will see. As to these three, I like what I have seen so far.

Did Dontavious Blair warn Kyle Phillips to not eat his spinach? Perhaps....but Kyle didn't listen..........now for the rest of the story.....

KMac was ranked The #1 Player period by one service iirc. That's some pretty strong hype right there. So, maybe that could be considered an overshadow.

Shy actually played in the Spring, so that coupled with KPs absence/recovery may have contributed to some overlook.

Nevertheless KP seems to have rectified the situation nicely. Shouldn't be a problem from here on out.

Why no? From all accounts Phillips is very fast, I wonder though if he is as quick of the ball.

"No" because Curt has found his home @ DE. For sure he will line up at the Sam or Wil in certain situations, but does not have the speed to roll back, and match up downfield on a consistent basis. With a front four capable of re-establishing the line of scrimmage, and occupying 5 to 7 hats on every snap, I prefer speed merchants at LB ( bring the wood converted safety types ). The kind of guys that arrive just before you realize they're coming.
They aren't being talked about much (other than who lines up @ mlb), but I am real excited about the athleticism about to take the field across the board, but especially at LB. I don't have much "game" exp. to base it off of ( other than JRM), but with what I have seen out of Cortez, Dillon, and others, ...... I'm thinking we have what it takes to play SEC defense.
It's been awhile guys & gals, but we are going to line up with teams this year, look out across the field, and have better athletes than many.

I'm also excited about Darrell Taylor, Q. Sapp and Austin Smith. All are great athletes with huge upsides.

If, comparatively speaking, Kyle was overlooked or overshadowed, it was prior to his performance in the Army All-American game. He was a highly regarded 4-star prospect but, if memory serves me correctly, he was not, at that time, ranked among the top 100 prospects nationally. In the aftermath of his dominating performance, he made a massive jump in the final rankings, which landed him in, or at the cusp of, 5-stardom.

General Neyland coached a whole season without one point being scored on the entire team O,D,or special teams of course that was a much different time in football. The only team to ever do that. Although they did get scored on in their bowl game. I believe the bowl game was against southern Cal.

It was a different era but still impressive.

UT isn't the only team to not allow any points during the regular season...they're the last team to do it, though.

I don't know of another one. If there was one, it had to be around the turn of the century when football was in its infancy. A check on the internet did not have any information on the subject.

Khalils size might limit him to more of a 2 down run specialist. Kyle will see more action in his role.

Quite true. This one, however, we still hold and it will never be broken:

Most Consecutive Quarters opponents held scoreless (Regular Season): 71—Tennessee, from 2nd quarter vs. LSU, Oct. 29, 1938, to 2nd quarter vs. Alabama, Oct. 19, 1940.

That is the equivalent of almost eighteen consecutive games. For the 33 games, including bowl games, that we played in those three seasons, we gave up a grand total of 75 points.
