Phillip Fulmer very high on Venables and Chad Morris!

He hopefully would bring Dan Brooks with him back home to Tennessee. The best coach on Vols staff from early 90s thru the end of Fulmer era. This would be huge for defensive line recruiting and player development across the defensive line. Look what he's doing at Clemson. Been at Clemson since left when Fulmer was fired.

Tennessee's defensive line would be among best in country again and would be HUGE!

How many Dlinemen has Brooks put in NFL? How many dozens?

Sounds good to me!

One, we already have multiple Venables threads. Two, Dan Brooks retired last year.

There is a sticky that says read the 1st page.

I thought he was a solid coach then and I still do

yeah. he's just not going to get anyone excited, then or now. when this started a couple weeks ago, i think many, self included, thought the ceiling would be much higher.

we were...um..wrong on that one. :p

If Fulmer was so cunning to get this job why didn’t he work this magic to get hired in the first place?

You are underestimating Fulmer's Machiavellian genius. You see, this is all part of a long con dating back to 2008. Fulmer was tired of coaching and decided he wanted to be the AD. He tanked the season and then conspired to get Kiffin hired. Then, just one year later, he orchestrated the departure of Pete Carroll (Fulmer had planned the whole Jim Mora hiring/firing in Seattle, of course) and simultaneously made sure USC would have sanctions hanging over their head, thus ensuring Kiffin would take that job.

I can't go into the rest of the details (might give away my sources), but trust me: Phillip Fulmer is a twisted, scheming genius of the highest order. I'm glad he's on our side!

I honestly went into this fully expecting that we would find a way to botch this. Never in my worst nightmare did I think it would turn out to be this level of dysfunction.

I am all for Venables, but I figured the guy doesn't want to be a HC. Hell, he is more qualified to be a HC at a P5 school than half of the head coaches out there.

Me neither. but what happened, needed to happen. regardless of the coach we get.

now, if we get something out of left field that is just flat out bad, that's just another gut punch, and we'll just have to live with the "be careful what you wish for, you just might get it" narrative.

hoping that's not how this turns out.

If we hire Venables, who would he hire as his OC? Probably not Tee in my opinion. Are you going to hire an OC that has the head coach in waiting tag on him?

I would suspect Dan Brooks, who was on the staff at Clemson with them, speaks very highly of both.

Some people are going to be so disappointed. The Gruden or bust types were never going to be satisfied because that was never going to happen. Twitter champion Kiffin was never going to be an option either. Neither is pulling in an experienced 1st tier caliber HC.

At best it'll be a 2nd tier candidate. At worse a 3rd tier up and coming HC with experience or retread or assistant. My money is on one of the latter 2 options.

I was really hopeful that Fulmer had the best interests for UT at heart. Now I see thats just not the case. Well that sucks. Maybe the next AD will be interested in winning instead of friendships.

If I was the AD and was looking at Venables or any coordinator to be my head coach. The first thing I would do is have them put together the staff they would bring! Because we all know the head coach is important but he is only as good as the staff he put around him.
