Agreed to the fullest. As a nation, we Vols are truly a blessed people.
I got an interesting perspective on Al through a teammate of his at jcm's. This guy was also a collegiate athlete. I worked with him, and was close enough he'd tell me about their conversations.
This is a summary of several conversations that took place in the early 2000's.
"Al called me the other day."
"Oh cool, what's going on in denver."
"Man, he's whining about playing time, and getting respect."
"I cant picture that. Al Wilson whining?"
"It ain't really whining, it bitching, but that's Al. If you are close to him, you'll see that side. That's Al he's paranoid man. It's always that chip on his shoulder. Always feels like he don't get the respect he deserves. That's what makes Al, Al. But when you talk to Al you know that's all you gonna hear. It's like he don't even know he's in the NFL, he can't enjoy it. I tell him to just enjoy it, then he just bitches more."
It's always interested me, this take from what was basically a childhood friend.
I brought up when, it may have been at the heisman ceremony in 98. But some doofus ESPN reporter asked Al one question.
"What do you think about facing the mighty Seminole defense?"
Al bristled, may have been confused by the idiotic question, since he himself wouldn't personally be facing the seminole defense, and probably wondered if the reporter even knew who he was.
So Al finally said, through almost clenched teeth, "Yeah we good a pretty good defense too."
I brought that up to my cooworker. And laughed when he immediately responded.
"Oh yeah he bitched about that too. That fired his ads up."
Always appreciated that insight into his character.
