Phil Steele rankings

LOL! Your welcome. Was going to type more, but just couldn't think of what to say at the time.

I just think that he is giving Georgia way too much credit. Their defense will not be what it was in the past, and will their running game ever be reserected? I still dont think that they have any really good receivers over there for Stafford to throw to. Georgia will have a solid defense, with a poor offense once again.

He has Tennessee way too low. Just look at our opponents this year:

California: The defense that the Vols shreaded last year lost alot of key players, and will be even worse.

Florida: Defense is gutted. Their defense is how they won the NC last year. We catch them early before the youngplayers have had a chance to face speedy competition.

Georgia: We are a more solid team than GA. A dissapointment if we don't win this one.

Alabama: They still dont have the talent to beat us. Good WR's, but defense will be very suspect.

South Carolina: No one on their offense scares me.

Arkansas: Their solid defense is gone. Will take a major step back this year. If our run defense improves this year, we win this one easily.

I just don't see why we don't stand a great chance of beating all these teams. I'm not saying we will beat them all, but I think that we win 4 or 5 out of those 6 games. The others that I didn't mention are gimmies. JMO

SC scares me. Spurrier knows how to pick apart a UT secondary better then anyone, and UT's secondary will be very green.

I agree we should probably beat Bama and Arkansas.
GA I would say is a slight favorite, and UT will be underdogs against Florida.

Cory Boyd should scare you.

Blake Mitchell won in Knoxville in 2005.

We were lucky to win last season - a defensive TD and a fluke TD helped us win. Our "amazing offense" was outgained by SC.

Spurrier will coach 'em up, if he can do it at Duke, he can do it anywhere

the only thing i'll say to that is they've been saying that about him since he's been there and it hasn't netted SC anything except some moral victories and a W against the worst TN team in two decades.

having said that, i don't think SC is as far away from legitimately competing for the East.

worst team or not he did beat us. He really scares me only when he has a qb he recruited. I dont think he recruited Blake right?

Correct Jakez. SC's defense should be good. Cory Boyd may be a good back, but we will see better next year. SC lost Rice, and Mitchell will be throwing to Larry Freeman (JC Transfer), and a bunch of no names. Even though Tennessee has a bunch of new receivers this year, they are much more talented than SC's, and Ainge is miles and miles a better QB than Mitchell is.

i don't think so, and he was so confident in Blake last year that he benched him for Syvelle newton, who he benched the year before for Blake.

it's not like he was choosing between Danny Wurfeil and Terry dean all over again.

he doesn't have answer at qb...Mitchell better work out for him this year...and to be honest, i don't think he'll be awful.

Nah, Blake was a Holtz recruit.

Spurrier finally got his qb in Stephen Garcia...but Smelley was a solid recruit for Spurrier also.

yes, very solid. he's been sitting on the bench like a 4 start guy should.

- Cory Boyd doesn't scare me. Steve Spurrier does.

- Elmer Fudd could have won in Knoxville in 2005.

- We might have been "lucky to win", but it was a gritty win, and those have been rare in Vol-Land the last couple of years. The mark of a good team is one that can scratch out a win when things don't don't seem to be going their way. Mind you, I'm a rabid "NegaPhil", and I have to say that was a tough, gutsy job against SC.

Truth is, looking at the 2007 sked, they all scare me. If UT gets past Cal, USM, and UF...look out. The confidence and momentum those wins would provide will be a huge boost.

Then again, if UT loses two out of those three, that could put the team into the "circling the drain" mode, and we could easily be looking at another 4, or 5, or 6 loss season.

We'll have a good feel for where we're headed by the end of September.

Go Vols.

I got in on this a little late and have no idea what you all are talking about, but isn't Phil Steele the guy that picked Casey Clausen to win the Heisman and us to win an NC in '02?

LOL, yeah, he can be way off sometimes. No more than the others, though. I won't buy an Athlon ever again. Actually, I might. Last season I read Lindy's, Sporting News, Steele, etc, so quickly that I needed something new to read, so I bought Athlon.

I highly doubt that we lose to S.Car. They really don't have anyone except visorboy. He's a good coach, but has little talent. 4th in the East? Our D will be a wrecking crew this year with everyone we return in the front 7. I also don't see our offensive production dropping off at all. Ainge will still throw for 3000 yards. This is our year to win the SEC and if we don't I say Phil is gone.

Just another example of Fulmer's underachivement. Steele is widely considered the best prognosticator in the business.
I agree, he puts out the only preseaon magazine that I actually consider to be knowledgable, the rest I read for entertainment.

I look at them at the counter and buy the one with the hottest cheerleaders in the "Sidelines" section. Has worked very well in the past.

We return 4 starters in our front 7.

I usually read most of the preseason magazines just because it is a good way to pass the time until football season. It drives me crazy how some people take what Lindy's, Athlon, Street and Smith, etc. to be the gospel for the upcoming season.
