College football - Phil Steele's betting guide for Week 4

No. 19 Florida Gators at No. 14 Tennessee Volunteers (-6.5)

3:30 p.m., CBS

I had Tennessee over Virginia Tech two weeks ago, and after a rough first quarter in which the Volunteers trailed 14-0, they came back to deliver the win. That looks even better now after Virginia Tech beat Boston College 49-0. In Week 3, I had Ohio plus four touchdowns, as Tennessee was in a massive flat spot, having just played in front of 156,000 fans and having four huge games on deck. It was an enjoyable game for me to watch. This week, I am back on the Vols.

Florida has perhaps the best defense in the country and is holding opponents to 286 yards below their season average and to just 130 total yards per game, but the Gators have taken on three flawed offenses. I am concerned about how Tennessee's offensive line, which has allowed seven sacks, will perform against a Florida defense that has recorded 16 sacks in just three games. Senior quarterback Joshua Dobbs' mobility will help. On the flip side, Tennessee has my No. 15-rated defense, holding foes to 116 yards per game, but it will be without cornerback Cameron Sutton. Tennessee does have a solid edge on offense, and Florida will be without quarterback Luke Del Rio.

The Vols led 27-14 last season and were in control, but they fell apart late on the road, allowing a 63-yard touchdown on fourth-and-long after a short pass with 1:45 left. Yes, I know that Florida has won 11 in a row in the series, but that makes this one of the most important games of the year for the home team.

ATS pick: Tennessee
Score: Tennessee 23, Florida 10

That 116 yard figure is surprising. I thought we'd given up about 3x that amount in each game.

Florida best defense in the country holding opponents to 130 yards per game.

Tennessee 15th best defense holding opponents to 116 yards per game.

Help me out, guys...

I generally trust Steele'a opinion but I have a hard time seeing us win by 13.

Although I think that's pretty close to what I said in the pick the score context. LOL.

I hope his right but two point:

- Del Rio will likely play

Since will Del Rio "likely play?"

He's fresh off a knee sprain...did you see that hit? McElwain's too smart to play him this week. He knows with our schedule being tougher than theirs he could drop this one and still get to Atlanta. He needs Del Rio down the back stretch against LSU and Arky for that.

Two more points:

-UF stopped 3 times this year on 4th and 2 inside the 10 yd line by cupcakes with Del Rio playing.

- Alabama lost to Ole Miss who lost to Memphis then won a natty. Common opponents are meaningless.

I just think this is one of those games where you can throw all of the analysis and stats in the dumpster. Throw "this or that person" is hurt in the dumpster. Basically FILL IN THE BLANK in the dumpster.

This will be a brawl, plain and simple, with the team who can throw the last punch left standing.

I will be utterly shocked (and pleased) if our defense holds them to 10 points. Appy State had 13 in the first half. Ohio of course had 19 points. Our defense will do better against Florida?

Two Counter Points
-Del Rio will play... with a clip board and a headset on Saturday
- Miami had video on what Appy did to the Vols and went in with a more appreciative mindset and Appy lost their best football player and about 80% of their offense when Marcus Cox went down in the 1st Qtr.

Appy and Ohio may have better offenses than the Gators

No way Mac risk the entire season for this game. I don't expect LDR to play.

Im sure he saw it but a lot of teams struggled so im sure he wrote it off as opening weekend jitters.

It all hangs on whether or not Tennessee can get consistent pressure. Do that and we very well could hold them to 10 provided Shoop doesent take a half to get the D to play ball.
