Back when Tennessee was good, we canned winning coaches for better coaches. Johnny was a Tennessee hero who left Pitt after winning a National Championship. In the 3 years before he was fired, Majors went 11-1, 9-2-2 and 9-3. His winning record didn’t stop us from booting him for an arguably better coach.

Now, we’ve got an obvious loser in Pruitt but we won’t can him. Phil should be calling Freeze right now. He should back-channel to get the best coach. Once he lands the new coach, cut Pruitt out in the same sneaky, cutthroat way he was fired and Majors was fired. I believe he’s looking now.

Fulmer will give Pruitt as long as he can. Whenever he realizes his ass is about to be canned, then he’ll pull out the knife and plunge it into Pruitts back.

Problem with this when the Majors / Fulmer transition happened, the incoming guy was already on staff and took over a team mid-season that was clearly on a decline and made a winning season happen.
The new guy already had the familiarity of the team and other coaches.
Also, with the health issues, Majors' longevity came into question (remember it was early 90s and the medical advancements of stents, drugs, peripheral access, etc. were not available like today - any heart attack was considered a major event).
All of that pointed to a prime time to make the change.

The only thing we have going for us in making a switch right now is the talent level is as high as it has been in the last 8 to 10 years across the board.

There was more to that story than just "booting Majors for an arguably better coach".

There were political issues at stake with boosters/admin, the fear of losing up and coming Fulmer, AND Majors' drunken call to the Board of Directors/AD in the middle of the night

That's not what happened.

I thought you were going to say fire Pruitt and install the undefeated 1-0; Jim Chaney as the next head coach.

OP & the people like him/her/it revel in the hate of CPF, all the while ignoring the facts. I revere both coaches Majors & Fulmer yet realize that the former stepped way over the line, which led to his dismissal.

Johnny > Phil

Fulmer could've never done what he did w/o Majors. Majors had us as a top 10 program by the time he left. He built what could legitimately be called "the best coaching staff in America."

Fulmer was a better recruiter, but I think if you put Fulmer in a similar position to Johnny taking over in 1977, he would've flopped. He was never good at hiring staff. That said, we were probably better off with Fulmer in the late 90's.

Well let’s give Pruitt a decade or so to piss off alumni, fans, boosters and the board so he can be in the position Johnny was in back in ‘92...

true. And i like what both Majors and Fulmer did for the program each. There truly is no "side" when supporting Tennessee athletics.

Tennessee has less than $10m in their Athletic Dept reserve fund. Kinda hard to pay $13m to get rid of a guy and then go pay $25-30m to bring in a new coaching staff. Boosters will not put up that kind of money. Pruitt is not going anywhere this year.
Then chances of Tennessee being relevant are done for another decade.

Facts can be your friend. There is no way we would pay $30MM above what we are currently paying to hire another coaching staff. Luck Fickell has a buyout of $4MM, for example. Even if you bought out a few of Fickell's assistants to follow him to UT, you are looking at $6-$7MM tops in buyouts for a new coaching staff.

The finances are bad enough already that we don't have to make sh-t up to prove a point...

That's not legal in a lot states what Fulmer did to Johnny!

Hmm, and the lesson you draw from our getting rid of Johnny Majors and Phillip Fulmer is to...fire coaches even quicker?

That's some weird lesson-drawing.

What I take from the lessons of Majors and Fulmer is something entirely different: we as a program and community need to have MORE patience, not less. Stay the course more, not less. Give more chances, not less.

Who knows where we'd be if we'd just stayed with Johnny. He was a champion-caliber coach, so probably more championships. But we'll never know, because we pushed him aside too soon.

Who knows where we'd be if we'd just given Phillip a one-year sabbatical to get his drive back. He was a champion-caliber coach, so probably more championships. But we'll never know, because we pushed him aside too soon.

And now we're being awfully quick on the trigger with Pruitt.

Sure, he may not work out. 2021 might be just as bad as 2020, which--everyone agreed going in--was going to be weird and "a freebie." Maybe, just maybe, Pruitt is a championship caliber coach in the making.

Maybe not. A whole lot of folks on this board are pinning their bets on the "not." They say it's clear. They say it's undeniable. Maybe they're right. We'll see in a year.

But if they're wrong, and we start winning big in 2021, that'll be a whole helluva lot better than having started all over with a brand new coach.

Unless you just love hatin', and pushing coaches out. As too many Vols fans apparently have for decades.

Go Vols!

Best post I've read on here in weeks. Pruitt will be with us next year; at least I hope so.

Drunken call to the Board? I knew he publicly chirped about his contract at events prior to that year's football season, but never heard that one.

The difference is Fulmer was the one who told us Pruitt was going to bring Tennessee football back. Fulmer was wrong and doesn't want to admit it

Fact is canning Pruitt could cost more next year than this year. If we have significant staff turnover this year, which is expected, we will need to offer new staff 2/3 year guaranteed contracts. Those amounts could exceed the lesser payment that we would owe Pruitt next year. Best thing to do is to rip the bandaid off now.
