Below is an excerpt from Tom Dienhart, Rivals dot com.

It seems as if Phil will give the Vols the ole screw whether he is fired or stays on. Either way, not a win win situation for the University.

• Will Phil Fulmer survive at Tennessee? Fulmer, in his 17th season in Knoxville, is under fire with his Vols off to a 2-3 start. With games remaining at Georgia, vs. Alabama, at South Carolina, at Vanderbilt and vs. Kentucky, it's possible the Vols could have their second losing record in the past four seasons.

While the Vols won the SEC East last season, Fulmer hasn't guided Tennessee to an SEC title since 1998, the year the Vols also won the national championship. Since then, Alabama, LSU, Florida, Georgia and Auburn have won SEC crowns.

But remember that Fulmer signed a contract extension in the offseason, and he has a hefty buyout. Published reports indicate Fulmer would be owed $6 million, payable in 48 months. The first payment would be due the month after he is let go.

If Tennessee does replace Fulmer, among the early names being bandied about are Kiffin, Connecticut's Randy Edsall, Cincinnati's Brian Kelly, Utah's Kyle Whittingham, TCU's Gary Patterson, Wake Forest's Jim Grobe, Missouri's Gary Pinkel, USF's Jim Leavitt, BYU's Bronco Mendenhall, Boise State's Chris Petersen and East Carolina's Skip Holtz.


The dream candidate might be Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden, who was a G.A. in Knoxville in 1986-87 and whose wife is a former Tennessee cheerleader. But he would be a very long shot.

If Tennessee does replace Fulmer, among the early names being bandied about are Kiffin, Connecticut's Randy Edsall, Cincinnati's Brian Kelly, Utah's Kyle Whittingham, TCU's Gary Patterson, Wake Forest's Jim Grobe, Missouri's Gary Pinkel, USF's Jim Leavitt, BYU's Bronco Mendenhall, Boise State's Chris Petersen and East Carolina's Skip Holtz.

Please don't get the UConn coach. I forgot a/b Whittingham, he could be a rly good hc here.

It is not "screwing" somebody to expect them to fulfill the agreed upon obligations of a contract.

I think my two favorites would be jim leavitte and gary pinkel. i love what both have done with there programs. either would be a good hire but not sure where tennessee is gonna go with this one.

Implied obligations aren't worth the paper they aren't printed on. The terms were negotiated in good faith by both sides, with a clause constructed for termination by the university. If the university wants to terminate, they have to abide by the clause. Blame Fulmer for losing football games if you want, but don't blame him for having a contract that he and the school both freely bargained for.

I'm not blaming anyone for anything, except Fulmer for the decay in our program and losing too many football games.

I understand the 4 corner doctrine and am not debating that. I am saying that his contract exists based upon the premise that he would win more football games than we would win without a football coach. He's not meeting that standard.

As I said, there is a provision for his removal. That still doesn't constitute a screwing.

screwing is harsh, but you must admit that he is not performing and has not performed for many years to a level commensurate with his pay package. Ergo, robbery is probably a more appropriate description.

I was referring mainly to the thread title, but I just have a hard time blaming the man for accepting the compensation package (including the buyout provision) that the university willingly gave him.

I may just be speaking for myself here, but I see all arguments on possible coaching replacements. I see the good and the bad, but I just wish Skip Holtz would be erased from all talks. I see that name and just cringe at even the thought of him coming to Knoxville.
