Phil Fulmer talking to assistants

Fulmer is not a long term solution. However, I think he is one person who could definitely stop the bleeding from within. Dooley burned a lot of bridges in this state, and we are being out recruited by James Franklin in our own backyard. It will take time for a new regime to rebuild those ties. Fulmer wouldn't have to do that.

Uh, Gruden hasn't coached because he hasn't wanted to. His name has came up for every job under the sun, and he could have his pick of jobs. Phil cant get his foot in the door, big difference.

Comparing NFL records against NCAA records is foolish, its a completely different animal.

Let me respectfully disagree on one thing: How do you know PF cant "get his foot in the door" of any HC job?
Are you his agent? Do you know who has put out feelers on his level of interest in a particular job?
All you know is he hasnt taken a job, nor has he been "publicly" offered one. I dare say IF he wanted a D1 HC job, he could have had one somewhere....

So with the academic rules that were handed to Phil in 2002 that has made it hard to recruit to UT madde him lazy or the first to have to adjust and try to figure out how to get top level players here ? Everyone on here is agreeing with a new coach that these rules will need to be changed or we are at a "competitive dissadvantage" (who said that? oh our current AD in so many words) so if Gruden needs these changes why wouldn't Phil or is our hatred for him so deep there might be more reasons for his decline than his work ethic? Not that I am promotoing Phil nut I am saying that I would like him back before I would some of the other names being thrown around. I would list my candidates in order as : 1) Gruden 2) Stoops 3) Patterson 4) Fulmer 5) Davis. Just a serious question would love to hear real answers or opinions. Thanks. GBO!

Still no replies?

I guess we will find out one way or another this year, as he is no longer being paid by UT.

i was wondering when the academic restrictions, were put on CPF,this explains a lot,it won't happen, but I'd like to see him as the HC with the bridle off on recruiting ,he is number 2 in wins in UT history and would have beat the Generals record by now

Agree totally. When he was not being hampered with the academic rules he was unstoppable in recruiting. No one on here can argue that. The ones will say he was "fat and lazy" but then say the new coach will need these same rules changed so he can be successful or not at a competitive dissadvantage. The root to our football problems land at the feet of Cheek and Hamilton. That is why Fulmer in his speech after being fired thanked everyone except those two.

One thing, Cheek wasn't hired until Feb 09.

I was not aware the academic rules level went all the way back to 02. If so, explains a lot.

Yet, Phil pulled in the #3 ranked class in 07. Hmmm

Be the best coach UT had since.. well.. him

Hey volnation this is my first post. You guys help keep me on the right track till I get the hang of this.Maybe Fulmer is just trying to get a maintenance job. Im almost positive we dont need him anywhere near the football program at UT.

I'm waiting to see the schools that are lining up to hire Fulmer....where is the line and where does it start forming again?

All the last 4 seasons prove is Hamilton botched the replacement. They in no way prove firing Fulmer was a mistake.

I've actually seen this sentiment more than once on this board.

Will someone please explain this bucket of crazy to me?

It was absolutely a mistake to replace Fulmer with Lane Kiffin's Daddy and Derek Dooley. Who, four years later, would even give 2 seconds to a thought contrary to this?

You can't turn back the clock folks.

I'm a Fulmerista, and it is difficult to go back before Hambone's Experiment. I don't even think the K State example is a close enough analogy.

However:

Jimbo
Strong
Fedora
Gundy
Golden

Let's be honest, there is only one guy on that list for me I'd consider over Fulmer, and he would have to be very convincing.

Recruiting plan by Phil Fulmer:
Hello I won a national championship in 1998 Mr recruit. Afterwards I decided to become a professional lazy man. Also I have a lucrative Krispy Kreme contract. All the doughnuts you want son. Join up with the winning side and fight like heck.

Are we talking Fulmer now or Fulmer Pre-1998....because there is a decided difference you know.

I like the first four on your list. I'd leave off Golden because he's too close to Dooley..which isn't fair but it's the state of what things are here.

He's been geared up for 5 years ... no one has seen fit to drop his clutch ... sort of embarrassing for him & us.

Don't see how it's embarrassing to us. He won 75% of his games here and brought us a National Championship. If anything, it shows UT was smart enough to get rid of him when they did. The unfortunate part was UT under Hamilton had no clue what to do next.

You guys are like the best friend who leaves the best girl he will ever get for a flashy go go dancer. Then when everything falls apart they don't have enough common sense to fix the problem. Yes their pride may be hurt, but they would rather hurt than admit they were wrong. Instead they want to keep jumping around hoping to find someone better than what they had. In the end it never works.

Wait I have one stuck in my spare room now. Ya just to damn stubborn to admit he was wrong.

For some reason, this thread reminds me that I need to make liquor run pretty soon.

Thanks!

You're right but if he was still here he would be 5-15 VS Florida and 11-9 VS Alabama. We would not be in any better shape if he was still here.

And you know this how? I'm mean the games were never played. so really this is your opinion. Unless you have a Crystal Ball. If you did though why would you even worry you should know who are coach is going to be right.

So who is it please tell us all?

Cheek was not involved then this is true, but he has not helped the situation since his arrival.

I don't know all the names I have been trying to do some
research on when it started and how it effected our football program.

I know this much there was a huge tug of war behind the scene for control of the athletics programs. And on top of that certain people decided it wanted UT to be a top 25 academic school instead of a top 25 football school. That is why they raised their standards.
