I am from Memphis, and I remember the final years of Larry Finch's career as head basketball coach of the Tigers. He was the fat guy, that played ball for the team he coached, despite being a poor in game coach he recruited well enough to have a nice run of success. Then stopped getting recruits like he used to and lost control of the program. The fans saw it coming and they called for him to be fired long before the administration ever did anything about it. Instead of finding a quiet way out, the situation was allowed to reach critical mass and he was forced to resign.

Larry Finch never sniffed the kind of success Fulmer had between '95 and '01.

that's an extremely good analogy. I fear that Fulmer is too prideful and competitive to quit on his own.

On the other hand, I think in order for Hamilton to make a change Fulmer will have to have TWO seasons in a row of 6-6 or worse. Hamilton is always going to give Fulmer "one year" to correct his problems.

Sad isn't it VOLNBAMA? Just had to bring up the weight card, that's pitiful... if memory serves me, Larry Finch had a stroke or something - oh yeah I lived in Memphis for many, many years.. am very familiar with him....UoM will always be Memphis State to me.. son graduated from there and lives in Barlett...

GO VOLS.....
GO BIG ORANGE ........

HatVol you should get your records straight. Phil never will reach the record that Finch had. Finch remains the U of M's winningest b'ball coach with a 220-130 record. He also scored 29 points in the '73 title game loss..a feat Phil can't even do with 11 players on the field.

Remind me of all the National Titles Larry Finch won.

Agreed, but the Memphis fans never expected a national title either. He also consistently lost to his biggest rival, Cincinatti, kind of like Fulmer with Florida. I am not saying the two are exactly alike, its different schools and different sports. But the situations feel the same to me. Everybody loved Finch as a person and hated to fire him, and that is why it took so long to get done. I think we are having the same problem. The problem with that is you leave yourself in the situation to hire a Tic Price, which is what I fear with UT. Things will probably get worse before they get better. But if they remain comitted to the program they will eventually hire a good coach like Memphis did.
