Nice first season for Thompson. Good to see him getting recognition. He started 10 games for the Vols and had three interceptions, which was good for third in the SEC (first among freshmen).

I don't know if it was discussed last month, but he was also named Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-America. FWAA > News > Freshman All-America Team

Thompson and Taylor could turn into a great duo at corner for us. They both played extremely well for freshman this season. Obviously young and still learning, but it might be the first time in a while where we have great corners on both sides of the ball.

How can we not feel really good about the secondary next year? And they will need every ounce of their coverage ability with our green DL. Taylor either has a monster year or it will be a long year on defense.

Do we know how well the other freshman scored on PFF scale? Or any other Vols score well?

Anyone else notice that BOTH the freshmen quarterback All Americans were former Vol QB commits: Adrian Martinez and Trevor Lawrence. And Cade Mays too...

Just imagine if we could've held onto Horn from South Carolina and Dean from Florida last year. Our secondary would have been legendary!

I expect our secondary classes will begin to reel in some elite talent with Pruitt and Ansley. I also think we will see a big step forward this year on the field. It might not translate into many more wins, but the competitiveness I believe will be there.

The offensive line should improve, especially with some new talent. We hopefully get Smith back too. RBs and WRs are pretty solid, we just need JG to get them the ball and use his feet more. An improved OL will help there too though. The LBs added a lot of talent and that group should also improve. The DL is a big question mark. There is plenty of talent there, but we will need some guys to step up, including the newcomers like Emerson, Williams, Gooden, etc. We are slowly building a quality depth chart.

Love the two young corners, they played very well last year, especially given that our front 7 was allergic to offensive backfields all year. Flowers has excellent potential at safety and I think Theo Jackson has shown steady improvement. Warrior is good vs the run most of the time but a liability vs the pass pretty much all the time. Curious to see the young guys coming in and what they wind up doing, especially Burrell and McCullough. DBs are definitely the strength of our defense, hands down.

I believe that in the next couple of years it's going to become "Dangerous" to try to pass the ball against our DB's.

I think we're now getting solid talent and depth at both CB and both S positions and our D backfield could become elite after we coach them up and they learn everything they need to know.

Once we get our D line right and have a fast pass rush to keep solid pressure on the QB we'll start to see the INT's coming like we expect.

We have the coaching staff so a few more good recruiting classes and time for the kids to learn it all and we'll have a dangerous D that's very hard to score on.

I love it because we all know that the D gets the WINS and brings home Championships!

I can't wait!!!

This is even more impressive than first glance due to our front 7 being not so great. Improve there and these 2 guys will be first rounders.

We stole Thompson from South Carolina right at the last minute, didn't we?

In a sense. He's like Anthony Harris this year. But let's say we didn't feel we could get him in based on academics and USC swooped in and said they could get him in. That's basically what we did with Thompson from what I heard.

Funny thing is Trey Dean and Jaycee Horn were other top freshman DBs. We were close to having an absurd backline. Worked out anyway, but man that would have been nuts.

What's crazy to me is a guy like Thompson isn't rated higher, while a guy like Maleik Grey was much higher. Sometimes you wonder what these guys are looking at. Anyone with half a brain could see Bryce was crazy talented from his film.

I saw one of these grading things posted earlier and taylor was ranhgked like 5th but it was mentioned most teams avoided Taylor and ent at Thompson. gonna try to find it it was posted in a thread on here actually.I think they are both outstanding corners especially since they were not necessarily beneficiaries of a withering pass rush. These guys spent a significant amount of time in coverage and run support.. Imagine how good they'd be if they only had to cover guys 3-4 seconds instead of like 10 and weren't constantly having to come up for run support.

Wow!! Certainly impressive when you consider that he was an offensive player before his arrival at UT.
