6. Josh Dobbs, Tennessee Volunteers

The Vols might have the nation’s best running back tandem in Alvin Kamara and Jalen Hurd, and Dobbs gives them another rushing weapon out of the backfield. He hasn’t yet taken the next step as a complete quarterback, having posted a negative passing grade in his career, but his running chops are legitimate. He forced 45 missed tackles last season, which is an outstanding number, excelling both as a power runner on designed rushing plays and as a scrambler on broken plays. His top rushing performance of the year came in a 38-31 win over Georgia, when he broke a ridiculous 12 tackles, including several on this masterpiece of a run:

2 things: 1.) Watson should've been top 3 and 2.) the guy from Louisville is fast. He should be return guy and WR and RB.

Will be interesting to see what their 40 times end up as, just for a comparison.

Though that could be skewed because it's likely Hurd will specifically train to run a fast 40 to improve his draft stock, where as Dobbs probably won't care quite as much.

Dobbs running style is ridiculous though. He runs over people like he's a 250 pound fullback when playing at 215/220 last year. And he looks even more bulked up this year. Has a very Steve McNair-esque running style where people just bounce off of him. McNair's ability to do that appeared to be just because of his pure strength, but Dobbs looks far more "graceful" doing it.

I don't normally take issue with PFF, but Matt Davis doesn't belong on the list with these guys. Not much separation between Dobbs and 3/4, the problem
Dobbs has is that he makes it look easy.

BTW, if you haven't seen this kid from Louisville Lamar Jackson, he's something else.

Good post and I agree. Hurd had run some solid 40 times before, but that doesn't always translate into open field 2nd gear speed. Dobbs is much more fluid than Hurd, weaves and cuts without losing speed at all.

It will be in the air that determines if Tenn goes to the next level. Dobbs passing stats read like a Brandon Harris type performance. Both LSU and Tenn will have to do better through the airwaves to get to the promise land. If 10-3 is what you are shooting for, nevermind.

Stats may read like a Harris type performance, but from watching the two it's clear that Dobbs is a significantly better passer than Harris(not as if that's some accomplishment, just pointing out there's no comparison between the two).

It is undeniable though that Dobbs must improve his passing for us to get to where we want to be this year.

No way he's 6th best out of those players. He should be top 3 of those. I guess PFF hasn't seen him run the ball enough.

He's probably not better than Greg Ward & Deshaun Watson but he is better than 3 others they have listed above him. I would place him 3rd myself. That's ok he will prove it here starting in about 2 months. :)

That's my point. There are defenses in the SEC better than your offense. There will be 3 or 4 games, at least, during the regular season where the pound and ground approach just won't be making headway at the LOS. There will also be games that just turn into old fashion shootouts. And every game will have the opponent preparing and scheming for you like you're the favorite. That's the test Harris flunked last season.

You can't play the run game if you can't open up the field and keep D's honest. Why do you think we jet sweep so much? I hope to goodness, if you want to do it right, mix it up and throw Dormady in from time to time. Every other team would.

No, not at all. You will not win the SEC and beyond being one-dimensional on offense. Spread or not. The barn rode the power spread on their NC run. Cam had to pass well and often, and he had a stable of backs who could push the ball downfield.

Dobbs can make the necessary throws if need be imo. That just wasn't what the offense was built around last year. If your RB is gaining over 1000 yards and your QB is running for 600, that's an obvious ran system and what the coaches thought would work. I think it turned out fairly well, it was conservative play calling on the defensive side of the ball last year that cost us a double digit win season.

Correct. Although I will say Dobbs has a significantly higher ceiling should he put it together.

Watson is not that great.

Lamar Jackson is easily the best in the country. He's literally Michael Vick all over again. Fastest player on the field at all times while playing QB.

I'd also take Dobbs over Watson as a runner. Josh is faster, more elusive, and runs with better power.

Watson threw for over 4000 yards and ran for over 1000 all while their RB gained 1500 yards. Hate to burst your bubble, but that is the definition of great.

As for Jackson he might be faster but he's not as elusive or agile as either Watson, Ward, or Dobbs if you ask me. I think it's close for me when it comes to picking Watson or Dobbs.

Dobbs I believe is a little faster. Dobbs has a little more power in his runs. I think Watson may seem to have the better vision though like a RB should have.

I have no idea who this Davis guy is. That's laughable to even see a name that you don't even know on the list. I know that I've never seen him play myself. :eek:hmy:

Stats don't tell the whole story. Watch the games.

Watson also played 15 games compared to most other players playing 13.

Watson is not as fast or physical a runner as Dobbs.

Davis is SMU's very athletic DT QB. Ran for 761 yds and 10 tds last year. Don't worry though D4H, you don't have to be so incredulous about him.....he's black.
