Peyton Manning

I wouldn't want him to be a coach here for the simple fact that I'd hate for him to have a losing season and have the fan base turn on him.

For all the people who want Peyton Manning as our OC, could he be a good recruiter? I was too young to ever watch him. I don't think he would be. I don't buy the fact that people would come just for namesake. Maybe the quarterbacks, but then again maybe that's all he would recruit. Comments?

Makes no difference because Peyton will NEVER be a coach at Tennessee. Did Joe Montana go back and coach at Notre Dame? Did Troy Ackman go back and coach at UCLA and they have 3 Super Bowls apiece. Get over the Peyton thing people.

I never said I thought he would be the coach here, just said I've heard quite a few people say they want him here as coach. Wasn't meant to stir the pots, just wanted to know what people thought about him as a recruiter. I know he would be a good coach if he wanted to be.

While I agree this scenario is very unlikely and maybe even undesirable, the argument that it absolutely cannot happen is much weaker than the argument that it can. There might be a terribly small chance for it to happen, but saying it is impossible is a much more dubious statement.

You gave some interesting examples. And while your examples are true, insofar as those individuals didn't go back to their alma mater, we can also agree that those people are also not P. Manning. Right? I fail to see a connection between the actions of three unrelated people.

Using those examples would be like saying Obama cannot be elected president because there has never been a black president: Washington, Jefferson, Adams...Nixon... Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush...all white. Can't happen.

Oops.

Wow. You are so, so wrong. WRs and QBs would flock to us. Manning has been an OC picking apart defenses in the NFL for years and you don’t think kids or their parents know that and would want to be apart of that and taught by him? We just recruited the best WR class in the nation coming off 2 losing seasons with Chaney, who not to discredit his knowledge, looks like he missed a Digimon convention. Bring a guy back to his alma mater that’s been calling AND executing plays in the NFL and watch the recruiting pickup. I’m not saying we’ll get 5 5-star DT, but offensively it would make a tremendous impact.

Wow my young friend your age is showing. Recruiting is more than showing up @ the parents door & tweets. Think about how many kids show up for a summer high school camp just because he is making a guest appearance. The kids flock to him for the opportunity to get a few minutes of instruction. The talent comes to him. That's the real key seeing the talent first hand and evaluating how they respond to instruction. Peyton is an easy winner @ whatever coaching position he chooses.

It absolutely blows my mind that there are really people that believe an all time great/hall of famer will return to his alma mater to be an assistant coach.

he would be an excellent recruiter IMO. a bit raw at first, but he's a brilliant offensive mind and definitely could portray UT as a platform for success.

I don't think peyton will ever return to coach at UT, but undesirable???? not in the slightest.

The only people who would want to play for him know his history, understand his command of the game and have the intellectual capacity to understand how his involvement in their career could help them move to the next level. Obviously you are not one of them.

Lets see Peyton is honest, well spoken, educated probably Pro Hall of Fame and sinsere. Now that doesn't mean people will fall over dead for him but one would have to think it is a great start to get you in the door.

I was a student @UT when Peyton was playing. I did not know him personally but his nickname was caveman. His teammates called him that because he spent so much time breaking film down. Fulmer and staff broke down opposing teams previous four games film. Manning broke down previous seasons film, and his daily practice film for bad tendencies. I say all this to emphasize what has made Manning so great and that is work ethic. If he carries the same work ethic into coaching, commentating, or corporate world, recruiting etc. He will be successful.

I agree with you.

I was saying that I agree with those who make the point that P returning is highly unlikely and acknowledging that some think it might be undesirable.

As to my previous post, I always try to point out that I understand someone's position before I disagree with them.

We would have a chance with any offensive recruit(especially QBs). His name would sell anywhere. I would rather see him coach Qbs or something first though. Peyton's on commercials everywhere and deals with millions of fans pretty sure he can hold a casual conversation. But that's a mile away and not sure if he'll even coach.

I'm a little annoyed by the cynics acting like this could never possibly happen. Why not? It seems like he's going to pursue a coaching career, he's very loyal to UT and it's obviously a prominent position. If we have an opening for OC or HC one day, you don't think he would consider it?

All he would have to do is walk in the door... Say "I'm Peyton Manning, and I want you to come to Tennessee" sign a few autographs, and badda-bing badda-boom! Haha... We wish.

Also to the OP, if you're posting then you've seen Peyton play. He was good in college just like he was in the pros. No he wasn't as good as he is now but he's one of the best college Qbs ever. He set the SEC on fire(except for Florida). And just ravaged Alabama year in and year out. Youtube him and see what you come up with.
