Unfortunately I was only about 8 years old when Peyton Manning came through UT, so I do not remember much about it really. so my question is Who is more popular to fans (UT FANS) and and on campus Eric Berry or Peyton Manning?

well i guess since everyone is posting i'll at least say why i'm posting this! I have been reading on here about how everyone is gonna miss berry and everything, then someone posted that video of manning talking about why he skipped out of going to the NFL and stayed at UT for another year, and thought about...hmm i don't really remember that time, so lets ask some people that do!

I would say Manning in a landslide.

Although I like Eric Berry more than I liked Peyton Manning because I like you was about 8 as well in his final season.

Manning and it's not even close. Not taking anything away from Berry, but Manning touched the ball on every offensive snap.

Berry is electric and when he gets the ball or makes a big stop it is a huge momentum swing.

on campus no one really cares that much (at least during PM's years). They're students and you really see them like that. On the field I would have to say PM. Ask a Knoxville elem. school teacher how many Kids named Peyton/Payton have come thru their class in the past few years

Funny thing about legends...like fishing tales...they get bigger with time. :)

I was almost 30 when Manning was here. I'd have to say he came in with more hoopla because of what his dad did at Ole Miss. As much as I like Eric Berry, and taking nothing away from him at all, I think your star also being the QB is the perfect storm. He was just out in front so much, every single post game, etc seemed to begin and end with his performance. Which was pretty much always a good thing to begin and end with.

Manning and coming out of high school as well. Long before that first pump fake at UCLA for a touchdown.

I was at UT 1996-2001, and Manning was king during his time at UT.

That said, if Berry stayed for his seinor Year, i think he could earn a street name or a retired jersey.

I would go with Manning just because his teams won more games and an SECC. Of course, it certainly isn't Berry's fault that Failmer couldn't recruit other elite talent around him.

Peyton Manning stayed 4 years when he was the #1 pick after 3. We were a much better team when Peyton was here. We went 11-2 his senior year and we played 7 teams that finished ranked (3 top 5 teams) and we won the SEC for the first time in a long time. We were selling out 105,000 seats, etc.

If we were an elite team while Berry was here, it would be a different conversation. Not Berry's fault we aren't good, but that's the way it works. Berry might be the best college DB ever, and you can't really argue Manning is the best college QB ever (maybe pro, but not college).

Manning is so far ahead you really can't even compare. He was constantly being shown or interviewed on ESPN (which cost him the Heistman), he was on Letterman, they named a giraffe after him at the zoo, also a street, and he was a headline every Saturday. Berry's done some great things and had some great games but he's also disappeared on some Saturdays, I've only heard him mentioned once or twice on ESPN, and he's never been interviewed nationally.

I don't think he's anywhere close to having a jersey retired.

You could probably make an argument that Manning was even more popular his junior year than Berry is now.

Manning and not even close really...Manning was the talk of college football for 3 years of his 4 at UT...The heisman robbery was legendary and will be talked about for ages...Berry is a hell of a ball player and a great person but comparing his popularity to Manning is rediculous.

Well, I'll put it this way. I named my daughter, Payten, well after Peyton. I told myself back in '97 that if Peyton would come back for his SR season I would name my first born after him. Besides, Peyton is a great name for a boy or girl.

Manning...

The televisions in my High School were all on the same system, and were turned on and tuned in for Peyton Manning's announcement. You may as well have closed school early afterwords.

I remember one local radio station in Knoxville played Rocky Top for 24 hours straight immediately after his announcement to return. Peyton by a mile. No disrespect to Eric whatsoever, just being honest.
