Am I missing the NFL DTs? That group had some NFL DEs but I don't think you have 3 legit NFL potential DTs there like we will this fall.

Dude, I'm not sure how to take your thread or your post.

You serious Clark?

McDaniel, Mahelona and Harrell all played DT in the NFL.

Thanks for helping. I'm not sure what this guys angle is anyway. I would gladly take guys with the talent of these three players to add to the current roster especially McDaniel.

I am counting chickens prematurely but believe fall roster has multi year nfl starters and that group doesn't qualify

On paper the 2005 guys looked better than what we have now. You are counting those chickens early.

Justin Harrell got paid as a first round draft pick but has played 14 games his whole NFL career.

Jesse Mahelona...I do not want to speak ill of the dead but he went 5th round and never started.

Tony Mcdaniel went undrafted. He has not started in the NFL although he is still getting paid as a backup for the Dolphins.

I think 6 years from now
Montori Hughes
Malik Jackson
and Maurice Couch

will have experienced more success than the other group. The point of the OP was that we are recruiting better talent at DT this year than we have had since the time period when we brought in studs who went on to start in the NFL.

Taylor really likes the opportunity our depth chart provides. The problem is DeLoach, who is the other part of the package, does not like it as well. Maybe time, a season, and more visits from our staff can sway the DE.

O'brien is Tennessees only shot at landing a big time DT in this class IMO, & in the end he will probably end up at Michigan. Almost time to start realizing we wont land those big time DT's anymore.

Thanks for the info, CobbVol. Good stuff. Hopefully DeLoach can quickly see that he would have a great opportunity here at UT.

You're really pessimistic about our DT chances lol

I disagree, we're going to land O'brien and at least 1 more stud DT, along with 1-2 more good prospects/projects. Loooong way to go. JMO

Lol anyone want to make a sig bet on it? If I lose I will happily pay up but I'm confident we wont land more than 1 stud DT in this class.

You missed my point; crystal ball aside, these guys (2005) all looked as good at the very same point of their careers if not better on paper. DT is a position that gets payed a lot of money because the rarity of top flight talent even when funneled down to the NFL level. This is why dominate college DT's are picked in the top 10. You believe that three guys on the same team will move on to be dominate NFL players and I say the odds don't play-out. I love the guys we have but Montori has a hard time getting onto the field, MJ is an awesome undersized DT, and my favorite new guy hasn't played a snap.

Time will tell.

BTW at UT's peak we had 6 DT's in the NFL and this includes guys like Justin Harrell. We also had more D-line players in the NFL than any other College at that time. I don't believe the odds are in your favor. I'm not downing the guys your are talking about because they should all have a huge impact this season and happen to be favorites of mine, I just play the odds and they say..........not going to happen.

On to other things now. I hope we land 4 top DT's this year but I to believe we will be lucky to get 1. Maybe we can develop one or two more.

I think I am closer to your position than you think. I think we get 2 studs not 4. I think the 3 guys will be better than the 3 from 2005 but not close to Henderson and haynesworth.

I disagree on all counts. I think O'Brien signs with an SEC team. I would say UT or Alabama.

I also, as a true UT fan, would never say that we won't land big time DT's anymore. We had Anthony Johnson committed. We gave FSU a run for Jernigan in the finals days prior to NSD. And Couch is no slouch.

I mean... we're in a drought.... but come on.

O'Brien will end up at Michigan.

Anthony Johnson was commited b/c we had a family member of his on staff, he was going wherever that family member was.

disagree wholeheartedly.

Alot of people do, but for the past 3-4 years we have been saying the same thing each recruiting cycle "if we can just land a big time DT this class we could be back"/ Yet every class we end up w/ guys that are projects or guys that turn into decent players by their SR years.

disagree on O'Brien.

Maurice Couch is not a project.

I understand you think he ends up at Tennessee, I'm taking Michigan.

Couch has yet to play a down in the SEC, he may not be a project but let's wait & see how he does before people claim him to be a stud.

by this reasoning, your post about not getting a stud DT is finished then.

Gabe Wright and Anthony Johnson have yet to play a down in the SEC. Jernigan hasn't done anything at FSU. Let's wait & see how they do before people claim them to be studs.
