From an article on Scout:

Brian Randolph: "It was good going over plays with Coach (Peter) Sirmon, the new safeties coach,” Randolph said. “The coaches all told me they needed me in the secondary. I'm probably going to play free safety.”

According to Andrew Bone, this is also confirmed by Pat Martin.

i think this would be a great idea. we also need to hire a RB coach instead of having chaney coach them. more coaches means we have more guys recruiting and i dont see how chaney is going to recruit rb and relate to them. we need to hire a ace recruiter RB coach

Only allowed to have 10 coaches on staff. Sirmon was already coaching safeties this year as a GA. If he's being put on full staff, someone is on their way out.

I sure hope it's not Chuck Smith. This team has had considerable difficulty landing top shelf DT's over the past 15-20 years, except on a few remote occasions. Smith would go a LONG way toward reversing that trend.

If one of them just had to go, I'd much rather send Wilcox packing than Smith (if the rumors of the disputes were true), as Wilcox is more prone to use the program as a stepping stone and leave in a year or two, regardless.

Nevertheless, Marlin referred to the RB coach (being funny, he said). We don't have one of those either. So, it may be that Sirmon is still a GA.

If I were Dooley trying to free up a spot for Sirmon, the only expendable guy would be Russell. ST really only improved in Coverage teams. The Returns team was disastrous, and need I say anything about Lincoln?

I guess you are forgetting all the DL we put in the pros in the 90's. Kickoff return wasn't bad, and we didn't get a chance to see if punt return was good or bad because nobody could catch the ball. As for Lincoln he did finish horribly, but he didn't have as bad a year as before.

Yeah I thought, as someone mentioned earlier, that Joseph could be moving to some administrative position? Any merit to that?

Having a RB coach is huge. Look at what Eddie Gran accomplished with Hardesty in one year. Eddie was a highly regarded recruiter and RB coach. This is one position that needs special emphasis on just as the QB,Line, etc.

Thanks LWS. I understood that he worked with safeties last season, but the references on Scout implied that he had received some type of promotion. One of the national guys even backed up the story with Pat Martin.

Seems like they jumped the gun if there really isn't anything "new" with Sirmon.

I've kept an eye on recruiting every since the early 90's, and this has always been a weak spot for us in recruiting (except the Henderson/Haynesworth class). We've always had to settle for 3* types, it seems, and try to mold them into SEC caliber players. Harrell, Williams, A.Franklin, D. Walker, etc. I remember us having to convert TE's into DT's, play 255lb guys like Bill Duff, and move undersized DE's in at tackle...simply because we just didn't have the bodies. Jackson this year is a prime example. Of all the DT's that we got into the league, 90% of them were relatively unheralded when recruited, and took a while to develop. It would be nice to have a DL coach who can attract the kind of talent that often goes to LSU, BAMA, UF, UGA and such. Coach Smith can do that.

I like Coach Thompson, but he's not going to be anywhere near the DL recruiting magnet Coach Smith is/will be (if Smith were to be asked to leave and he take over the DL). F

For that reason alone, I think Wilcox needs to just suck it up and drive on. Smith, Chaney and Baggett are the assistant staff members I think we can least afford to lose. :loco:

but it was ok for Cut to handle dual roles?

Maybe I'm missing something, but if Joseph moves to administration, how can he get out on the road and recruit?

he can't. If Sirmon was made a fulltime coach, someone else would not be. only the 10 fulltime coaches can go out and recruit.

For god's sakes people.

1) If we fired a DC, you'd have to replace him. You can't NOT have a DC. You can't have D staff with S, DB, LB, DL coaches, & no bloody coordinator. I don't know many teams that have separate DB & S coaches in the secondary. I'm pretty sure we're NOT supplanting the DC with a S coach to staff.

2) No respectable team doesn't have a DL coach of some sort. NOT have a DL coach to add a S coach? No.

3) I kind of agree about the RB coach. Many teams do have a dedicated one of those. But, I'm fine with Chaney for now. He's a good recruiter from what I know about. A lot of OC's dual as OC/QB or OC/RB. Since we have a dedicated QB coach who seems to be doing a nice job with the QB's thus far, is well liked by them and all...then I'm fine with Chaney pulling double there.

My question is, does the S&C coach count towards the 10?

I was referring to some of the talk (a few weeks ago) about there being a rift between Wilcox and Smith, and some saying that Smith might not be here after NSD. That would mean shuffling the staff. Thompson to DL coach (he has past experience there, as well as DC experience at UCF, IIRC), and Sirmon to LB.
I just think CCS is as important to the DL and recruiting as Charlie Baggett is to WR's
