Never been a true, lone defensive coordinator. He's been a co-defensive coordinator at a couple of stops, but you know how that "co" title goes. A lot of times that title is just given to a coach to make them happy/get them more money. So there's some concern there. However he's supposedly a great recruiter and a high energy guy. Also, I'm just going to say it, it never hurts to diversify your staff even more to attract recruits.

It looks like he was DC at central Michigan for 3 seasons

Not sure about this hire. Haven’t heard of him. The name hasn’t even popped up in past coaching hires for other programs. Seen some in here say he’s a good recruiter but who has he help sign at penn state that he has brougjt in an developed that went
On to the nfl? I was fine with the wait in the hire, at least get it right if that was the plan so In this case I hope this was the best hire out of all the others. Welcome Coach Banks.

Banks has been at Penn State since the 2016 season, serving as safeties coach and the co-DC during that time. While safety play at Penn State has always been much maligned, Banks groups have found some success, with Malik Golden, Nick Scott, Troy Apke, and Marcus Allen all having played or (in the case of the latter three) playing in the NFL.

Banks is also known as a strong recruiter, with that nevermore being the case this past recruiting cycle when he landed Michigan standouts like Kalen King, Kobe King, Jamari Buddin, and Jaylen Reed.

The move for Banks is an obvious one: with Brent Pry seemingly firmly entrenched in his defensive coordinator role, Banks was going to have to go elsewhere if he wanted the “head” job on the defensive side of the ball. With Tennessee, he now has that opportunity.

So we're hiring Butch Jones's former DC? Interesting.

Won't hold that against him, though. The problem with Butch Jones is Butch Jones.

Banks and Janeck were CO-DC's at Cincy for 2 years. Banks left for IL and Janeck was Butch's DC at Cincy the year before he came to UT. So Janeck came along with Butch as DC at UT.

How come there's like dozens of people whose only job is covering UT sports, and yet national reporters break this kind of news?

How these things work is the reporter who "breaks" the news usually gives you good PR at some point in the future. If you are an AD who is trying to maximize your brand nationally, would you rather have Jimmy Hyams break the story or a national reporter? This isn't a dig at Hyams but his PR reach is extremely limited.

It's the same reason why Woj and Shams breaks most of the stories in the NFL and why Rapoport and Schefter break most of them in the NFL. Subject your brand to the biggest audience possible.
