Pete Thamel calls Fulmer a rube...

He condemns himself with his own verbiage. To liken CPF to a rube says much more about Thamel than anything else. The righter of wrongs will soon set UT on the path to titles and trophies, a reality which we had grown oh so accustomed to under his wise tutelage.
It's been a long time since I've heard or seen anyone called a "rube". It's archaic and informal. You don't hear it much anymore. It carries the connotation of a "country bumpkin" and implies a lack of sophistication, education and culture. It's most typically been used in the past by people who fancy themselves as being a member of "high society" when they are in the company of those they consider to be beneath them on the social ladder. I think of it as a pretentious insult. A person is giving themselves a lot of credit by using it. It's the sort of insult that Frasier and Niles would use for their dad. I think you should know someone pretty well before making such a personal critique. I would like to know what prompted Thamel to resort to name-calling. Is it Fulmer's southern accent, or something more? At best, Thamel is being judgmental. At worst, he is revealing a bias on his part.

Here's the $15 million question lingering over Virginia Tech

"The ultimate issue facing Fuente potentially coming off back-to-back flops is that it’ll be difficult to lure a high-end replacement for Foster, as no million-dollar defensive coordinator will be eager to join a sinking ship.
(And VT AD Babcock isn’t a rube like Tennessee’s Phillip Fulmer, who hands out guaranteed three-year deals like they’re Halloween candy.)"

Don't care what this a-- clown says -- but if I did, I'd rather be a rube than to have been duped so spectacularly

But what's really rube like is how many of you click on his stuff. Yahoo Sports wouldn't exist without you clicks.

Why am I not surprised?
I'm sorry I don't have the undying devotion you do to a coach that hasn't really shown much in the way of actual coaching.

But I'm sure you're going to tell me all about it anyway...

Tennessee was handing out stupid deals long before Fulmer took over as AD
Maybe you just put your finger on the problem; Tennessee's problems aren't the coaches, it's the A.D.s For instance, Mike Hamilton was a dud for the ages. His successors haven't shown they're much better. Unless we luck into a blind pig/acorn scenario, Pruitt's successor and his successors will be cut from the same cloth.

In other columns of his, Thamel has alluded to this notion that behind closed doors, other SEC ADs supposedly also consider Fulmer to be something of a joke as an AD. Isn't well-versed in administrative issues, is only there because he was a good football coach once and still a major figure at UT, etc. Every time he mentions Fulmer, he mentions this. He has this really, really strong negative opinion about Fulmer as if he has an axe to grind, but I'm not aware of any history the two have.

Also, ever since he got duped by Manti Te'o, most of what Thamel writes is a scathing, sarcastic critique of someone or something. It kind of has the appearance of a shtick he has developed, rather than being his genuine opinion. Taking no chances, perhaps?

Didn't Thamel also call Fulmer a backstabber for how he took the job from Majors? A charge I've never believed.
