Pete Thamel: biggest losers = Tennessee

loser: Tennessee
in the end, tennessee ended up with an inferior coach, an overmatched athletic director and setting a new standard for a disastrous coaching search. The hires that former athletic director john currie was on the cusp of making – greg schiano and mike leach – are exponentially more accomplished and better qualified for the tennessee job. But phil fulmer’s power play ended up with him in control as athletic director and alabama defensive coordinator jeremy pruitt as coach. Pruitt is just inexperienced enough that fulmer will be able to keep sticking his nose in the program, which is what he’s wanted since he was run out of the job nearly a decade ago. (the classic clueless fulmer moment was treating the press conference to dismiss currie like he’d just been hired as coach again, as his tone – including introducing his family in attendance – showed a stunning lack of self-awareness.) opposing sec athletic directors, by the way, are giddy to have fulmer in charge as his administrative acumen presents little threat to the rest of the league. Expect tennessee’s glory to remain faded.

Let's just cut-and-paste some of early 2013's greatest hits: "Butch gets it." "I believe Butch is the man," etc. Nobody knows anything that would back up these assertions. Pruitt is truly untested, no data points as a head coach. Butch was obviously missing a chromosome from Day One. At least that doesn't seem to be the problem this time, but we don't even know that yet.

Well said.

So far recruiting has almost been a miracle to go from ranked 60th to now 16th with only 12 days to work recruits.

The real test will come next year and the year after when Pruitt and our coaches have had a full year and 2 years to watch film more closely and see how the kids come along in their Jr and Sr years and to seriously get to know the kids and their family to build more solid relationships.

Our coaches know the X's and O's but now they have to bring in the Jimmys and Joes.

If we can't WIN the recruiting wars then it'll be much harder to WIN on the field.

Switching to the 3-4 D will make it even harder and will take a few more years longer because we must recruit the exact type of players for each specific position on the D.

From what I've seen so far, I believe we have the right coaches to get us back on top if we give them time and don't run them off too early.

VFL...GBO!!!

... the reason recruiting is going so well is because they already know these kids. These guys have been recruiting the SEC and region for years. This isn't a mid-major coach that hasn't talked to these guys or recruited the 2019 or 2020 class. The only thing will change is priority based on what TN needs. The relationships are already there. It is exciting indeed

Don't bring me down, maaaaan.

We’re a loser for hiring an unproven coordinator.... and MSU is a winner for.... targeting an unproven coordinator. Nevermind that it's well known that our unproven coordinator turned them down and they had to hire their second choice in unproven coordinators.

Brilliant, deep analysis there.

Maybe I'm just thick but isn't that pretty good proof a lot of the negapress the Vols get from sportswriters are personal vendettas?

This is a guy who is looking for stuff to slam us for. You gotta realize everyone was enjoying our train wreck. People love that stuff...and they are disappointed it's over. He just wants it to continue and was looking for ways to keep the fun going...so he was looking and HOPING for things at the presser to criticize. "Oh...look...he introduced his family. That's something there."...and he like so many others were hoping for a lame hire so he twists this into being that. He's disappointed we came out ok. He's no doubt mad at other media for saying we did a good job. It's human nature (as sad as that is) to wanna see the worst...and revel in others misfortune..and hate to see it end.

Heck..even some Vol "fans" here are mad we came out ok.

He is big buddies with Currie. Currie fed him info that Fulmer was undermining him, and that was disproved totally. Now Thamel is butthurt that his boy Currie got shown for his incompetence. Thamel and Forde still get blasted about every other day from me and others on Twitter because of how they represented Currie and Schiano in the whole debacle.

My worst fear, lets hope not.

I don't know. I think what Tennessee needed was a ball coach. I think they got that. Pruitt will learn on the job with some things, so there will be a curve.. It's a question of how long and can he get past it. Game day coaching can't be any worse even for a first timer. The announcers would even chime in from time to time. Butch made Dooley look good on gameday, that's damn hard to do. I like his staff, but i liked some people on Butch's staff. It's a 3 year deal whether anyone likes it or not. He's pretty much untouchable for that amount of time. That's why i hate coaching changes. It's a wait and see deal now. Patience i guess. We have worn that word out over the last 10 years.

People act like he hasn't been coaching for the last several years. Hes probably forgot more about coaching than Butch ever knew. And the Fulmer haters are getting old. Give it a rest as there is nothing you can do about it.
