The reality is that this game will almost certainly be meaningless at the end of the year. It has zero to do with the outcome of the SEC race and the same BCS bowl berth is still on the line. The only way that it could be important in the scheme of things is if UT was in position to win the national championship and that seems so unlikely anyway.

Now, UT has a lot to work on. For one thing, what was with all the cramping? I realize your defense was on the field a lot, but one does wonder about conditioning right now. Second, to echo the comments of others on here, the tackling seemed very poor.

Bright spot would be Ainge. He took control and got you back in the game. I figured that with the way that UT took over things a bit in the third, that would give the defense time to rest, but in the end of course it wasn't enough.

Bottom line is that in a couple of months this game was bound to have little to do with your season, anyway. So time to fix things and get ready for the real season.

good that it was a non conference game... Vols need to play like how they did in the 3rd quarter where D had 3 CAL drives for punts and offense did wat its supp to do...

Law, i wish i could share in the optimism.That was a pitiful showing to say the least.I'am having visions already of teebow carving that defense like a turkey dinner.Don't fret though law.One day it won't be so easy for your gators.But it will be when we have a new coach.

Umm technically you’re right about the outcome. But feel it told everyone that we are going to play that we can’t stop the run again. And we are very weak in tackling. Shut down the 5 yard dink and dunk, and well I could go on and on. It’s like looking at last years team again.

I don't know. I thought that happened more in hot, humid games.

I expected some gloom and doom here the day after, but you've been around the block enough times to know that by Wednesday things will have turned in terms of mood. And after a good win over Southern Miss, at home, attention will turn to UF.

I do believe that Florida is going to win that game -- and I'd be blowing smoke if I didn't say that the Cal game made me feel even better about it -- so I won't insult you. But if we learned anything at all this weekend it is that you count no team out. Ever. And UT's chances at UF were already about a thousand times better than that team that taught Michigan a little humility.

I think the reality is most of the SEC is going to run all over UT's defense this year. I think losses to Fl, GA, and Arkansas are likely if that doesn't get radically better.

When your true freshmen CB has more tackles then your entire starting front 4, you have serious problems on defense that aren't going to be easily fixed. UT is in trouble.

I imagine that any Cal fans on this board can attest that after the UT game last year things looked pretty bleak for them as well. However, they righted the ship and in the end finished the season ranked higher than UT. Also, from our perspective I'm sure everyone here was feeling pretty high about Tennessee after one game last year, and in the end we weren't quite as good as the Cal game showed. Clearly one game does not make or break your season. There is still a lot of football left to be played.

Very true, but that game just made our SEC schedule look a whole lot scarier.

you can't compare Cal's pac-10 schedule to UT's SEC schedule IMO.

If Cal had played UT's schedule last year they would have lost to LSU, FL, and Arkansas and finished at best 9-4 too.

no, i assure you, if the time comes where we are 3-3 or 4-4 then i will be singing a different toon. but for now let's at least see a second game to see what changes are made defensively and if we learn from the loss before we totally jump ship on this years team

Yup, a voice of reason.

I am sure that UT is going to come out with something to prove at home versus USM. Adjustments will be made. The offense looked good and the tweaking there will be modest compared to the overhaul that the defense probably needs.

But necessity is the mother of invention...

It seems everyone here on this board is whining about the defense being so bad, and I'll agree that last night was a pretty sorry showing. What seems to be getting oeverlooked is a seemingly bigger problem in my opinon that our special teams was once again atrocious. This has been the case for the last 5 seasons and and it doesn't seem to get any better. Something must be done to improve this situation, part of the defenses struggles related to the fact that the special teams gave them harly any help whatesoever, it seemed Cal started every drive from at least the 40 yd. line.

This has been the case for the last 5 seasons and and it doesn't seem to get any better. Something must be done to improve this situation, part of the defenses struggles related to the fact that the special teams gave them harly any help whatesoever, it seemed Cal started every drive from at least the 40 yd. line.

Yeah, our special teams definitely didn't do our defense any favors. Maybe we could start by actually having a special teams coach?

Our special teams problem is the same as defense.Comes down to a couple of things tackling and dicipline.Both of those things were sorely lacking last night.Those two things have kept us from being a really good team in years past also.I don't get or more so the kids don't get it,or there not being tought it.

Come on folks.

Did the special team play get a lot better last year as the season went on?
Did the defensive line play get a lot better as the season went on?

If the coaching staff knew about these problems from last year and had the entire spring and fall to improve them, what's 2 more weeks before Florida really going to do?

I think UT is in serious trouble. This might be Fulmer's last season.

you're right, in the past the special teams certainly hasn't improved, and fulmer has known for a long time that was a major concern. the d-line suffered a major loss when harrell got hurt last year and that hurt the quality of their play. let's see what happens with x. mitchell and see next week how things play out. i'm all for holding off on judgement for now, but if we lose to southern miss and florida, and are 0-3 at that point i'll be inclined to agree with you that it might be time to look into a change

the coaches can only do so much with the defense... i dont know whether the problem is with the play calling on defense as far as aggressive playcalling or if the guys just arent playing hard enough, bottomline is we need changes somewhere on the defense, i hear a lot of people saying its the offense but we did put up 31 points, so i dont think we need to worry about the o we just need something to change on d or this season will be similar to 2005

To stop a complete offense like Cal, we need to be very fast and physical. Last night looks to me, our players got to the ball a lot, but missed way too many tackles. In the big game, one defender misses a tackle, a 2-yard play will become a 20-yard. I just can't explain my frustration last night.
