Georgia scored 44 points.

17 of those points are on the defense, and they all came in the first half. We had plenty of opportunities to get them off the field and stupid penalties kept extending their drives. We also had an interception that we just magically dropped... they scored on that drive.

14 points are on the offense, more specifically the offensive line. We couldn’t pick up yards, so we were giving them a short field by punting from our own red zone. Doing this late in the game is tough on a defense, as the defense was exhausted. Two TD drives in the second half were the result of the offense putting the tired defense in a tough spot.

13 points are on JG. I get it, he was pressured, but not holding onto the ball, not having any pocket awareness, and throwing a freshman-level pick, those are solely on JG.

So basically, if JG doesn’t go into full turnover mode, we lose the game 31-21. Conclusion:

-Defense played well enough to win.

-Offensive line was the reason we lost.

-JG was the reason it was a blowout.

Thoughts?

My thoughts.
Past is the past.

Play a different QB against Kentucky.
Go Vols!

My thoughts

JG and the offensive line were the reasons we lost in a blowout because of lack of development.

Weinke and Friend haven’t produced top quality SEC products.

5th year senior QB that should be solid. Got to protect the ball better, period.
O line with several 5*s that play average as a unit. They played way below average in this game.

Defense did a good enough job to win.
Got wore down because of turnovers, and piss poor play by our O.

Guarantano was the reason we lost because the entire team broke down because of what they were seeing from their leader.

Interesting breakdown. Fact is, Kirby put a group of outstanding players on the field who are capable of playing 4 quarters of SEC football without falling apart. He provided insightful coaching from the sidelines and WHIPPED OUR BUTTS...even after spotting us a touchdown.
I hope our first coaches only meeting after that mess involved JP looking at his assistants and asking the question:
WTF have we been doing around here for three years that we put on that kind of SH*T SHOW..??

Georgia has some absolute stud pass rushers we knew that when they landed them as recruits. We have a very good O-line but Georgia has a defensive front that is going to give any O-line problems.

You said it: an O line that played average as a unit. This Unit should have played better, they have been together most of last year and two games of this year before the GA game. They did miss all of spring practice (Covid). On their defense, GA is probably the best front 7 they will face including Bama's front 7. I think by the time we are playing the late part of our schedule this Unit is much improved.

Never understood this kind of tortured analysis. Eliminate all the things unfavorable to your team, then your team would have won or in this case, made the score more respectable. If you're going to play that game then take away the gift 7 points on the high snap and the two long TD passes UGA game up and the Vols lose 31 - 0.

Got to admit, I thought I'd open the thread and see some dude getting run over by a steamroller.

That wasn’t the point of what I was saying. This isn’t an “all we had to do was these things” thread, it was a thread about how bears the brunt of the loss.

6 lookout blocks became 20 points for UGA, caused all the turnovers and short possessions. The penalties sucked too. All on the oline and rbs.

A lot of us overlook how poorly the RBs blocked on pass plays, but they were abysmal turnstiles, too.

Good on you for bringing it up.

Agree, but they aren’t 23 points better.
Yeah they are.
2017: 41-0
2018: 38-12
2019: 43-14
2020: 44-21

Hell, this is the closest Tennessee has played them in the JG/Pruitt era..and that isn't a compliment.
Last season Ga averaged 31 points a game while only giving up 12. UT had their best offensive output since 2016 with a staggering 24 per game while giving up 20..

They aren’t 23 points better, this year we had to have 3 turnovers in our own red zone to make them look 23 points better.

They also spotted us 7 points if we are playing this game.

At the end of the day you are what your record says. The last 4 games were utter beat downs.

No way to measure the opportunity cost, though. When we turn the ball over, we judge impact on scoring by whether or not the other team scored on the ensuing possession. We don't have a reliable way to factor in the cost of lost opportunity, as in "would we have eventually scored on that drive if the turnover had not occurred." Also, we don't factor in the impact of good/bad plays and turnovers on eventual field position.

Of everything, the drives that were extended by stupid penalties and resulted in TDs are probably the most deflating. The turnovers that lead to scores are maddening, when they're stupid turnovers.
