VolNation,

You will go on to have a good season, and a lot of the teams frustrations will be taken out on Terry Bowden's Akron team (1-2). They got blown out by UCF, lost to FIU in OT and destroyed Morgan State. Let's look at the UCF game as that will be the closest comparison to your Vols squad. Akron allowed ~55% 3rd down efficiency against a high powered offense. UCF only threw the ball 19 times (14 completions) for 9.5 yards per catch. Akron allowed 206 yards rushing on 46 attempts. UCF continually had short fields since Akron turned the ball over 4 times in the game (3 fumbles, 1 INT).

Offensively, they are averaging 39.3 points per game, but with a decent defense (again, looking at UCF), they only were able to score 14. Akron is very pass happy. Against UCF, they passed 54 times (31 completions at 4.7 ypc) and ran the ball 27 times for only 69 yards.

As I said, Tennessee will get all their frustrations out against a mediocre Akron team from the Mid-American conference. Both Bray and Neal will have field days in this game, and UT should be able to put up 60+ points on this team. Defensively, UT is lightyears better than UCF. I can still see Akron putting up 14 points, but against your second team. Look for your second string QB to get a lot of playing time, and Neal to get the ball more in the first half. Your strength is obviously in your passing attack, but Neal is no slouch at all. Hopefully, he is utilized more from here on out.

Akron: 10
Vols: 63

That was a big game the other night Gator. I don't think you understand how much they invested in that.....

I wouldn't be surprised if they came out flat. They still beat Akron. Could look sloppy though...

I agree with you, and I hate to say it, but this team (and many other UT teams historically, IMO) come out flat after either A.) and impressive win early on, thus underestimating the opposition, or B.) have a difficult time getting over a tough loss like this one, and rebounding well from it.

As I said in another post yesterday, this team needs to learn how to get up and beat the **** out of the kid that kicks sand in their eyes, preferrably before that game is over. I'm not sure they've figured out how to do that yet.

The whole mental deal is disturbing. Reflects on you guessed it, the head coach.....

Great. The gator fan tries to console us by telling us how easily we should beat Akron. It's the 4 games after that one that concern me.

Vols will struggle to a win... Will be ugly and frustrating to watch, especially if the Vols have ANY adversity whatsoever... The zips will hang for three quarters and possibly have a lead at some point early on. UT wins, but not by much. Maybe 10 points.

It does, now and ultimately. But, by the same token, this team has had too few--if any--true leaders on BOTH sides of the ball that just have that "it" factor to get up and keep persevering. I agree that the vast majority lies with the head coach (and his staff), but there's also some of it that lies with the players. Lathers is a beast of a leader, but he's no Al Wilson, and can't do it on his own. Bray and Hunter both showed me Saturday night from my nosebleed section seats that they still don't have that ability, even after 3 years of college ball. It's sad all around. I just want us to get back to being even moderately feared again.

I still think UT destroys Akron, and don't think they can hang with you. I know it was a frustrating loss, but they don't have the personnel to hang with you.

Nah, not trying to console you guys. Some posters here thought it would be cool to have a different perspective from an outsider. I personally think you beat UGA and USC in close games, and win one between Bama and MSU. I question MSU because Mullen runs the spread and your defense typically struggles against mobile QBs.

That's just ridiculous. Uga has everything going their way and they arent even at full strength. USC will win, maybe not easily but they'll win. If you think we have a snowball's chance of beating Bama you, sir, are delusional. I know you're trying to offer an alternative viewpoint but the idea that we'll stay within 5 TD's if Bama is patently absurd.

They might get one win out of that stretch from what i've seen.. UGA will wear us down and beat us...... Bama will make us their women and South Carolina gets to finish off what's left the next week. Only win i possibly see is MSU and that will be a struggle, they're a improved football team.. Go 0-4 in that stretch and well Dooley is done more than likely. Everyone is pointing toward the back of the schedule for wins. That's if Dooley hasn't lost his team by then....

I don't know if you noticed, but even in the Arky game, Bama's corner's were giving their WRs plenty of room. I'm not sold on their secondary, yet. A lot can change between now and then, but Bray should have a field day against Bama and keep it close.

No disrespect Gator, but that young Bama defense is better than what we faced Saturday night. That won't be pretty....

I am really concerned that we are going to get out coached in this one. We are facing a coach with the last name Bowden after all.

Bama's DB's could be inside Calhoun's having a plate if ribs and UT would find a way to screw it up....

Would love to here how you think we would do the rest of the season.

There is so much unkowns, such as injuries. I think you beat UGA and USC in close games. I think you split games between Bama and MSU. Not saying you beat Bama, but I think you keep it much closer than you think. You could go 2-2 in that stretch also, but UGA's defense is very suspect and your defense is better than you're giving credit to.

The UF game is a weird case. We already played in a hostile environment (TAMU) and I don't think even the most insane Gator fan could have predicted Driskel would have the day he did or the offensive output we did. I admit, I really cherished this victory more so than others only because of all the talk that we'd never hang with you guys. But I saw a LOT of positives from UT as did the Gator Club gathering I was with. Bray's passes in the first 3 quarters were threaded perfectly to his receivers. Your defense played assignment football and played a great 3 quarters. I think a few things happened that caused the meltdown including the grounding call, and the TD to tie the game. We'd never have been able to do this last year with Cheeseburger calling the plays. If he was still our OC, you'd have won this game 37-20.

I think you're easily a 9 win ball club with the potential of winning 10 games. I like Dooley not as a Gator fan, but because he is building your program back up from the destruction Kiffin left it in and he's doing it with integrity and class. You guys are so much better than last season. Your defense is playing better, your offense is far and beyond what it was last season. You haven't faced much adversity yet, or the stress that comes with a team making a comeback. They have that experience now, and it will only help them. I don't think they will give up, or let this type of stress affect them in this manner for the rest of the season.
