Perspective from an Iowa fan

Welcome to the board BrewHawk. Great first post and excellent breakdown and analysis.

I thought I would do you the favor of doing the same so you may know what to expect from the Vols.

Starters:

Jordan McRae, Senior SG: McRae has improved every year, and is one of the best offensive players in the SEC. He is 6'-6", but has an 84" wingspan which allows him to elevate and has resulted in some #SCtop10 dunks. He can drive really well to the basket, and he is a streaky shooter, but can hit from anywhere, so if he gets hot, watch out. Struggles some defensively, but is capable.

Jarnell Stokes, Junior C: Stokes is really another PF. He lacks the height and above the rim ability of a true C. He does eat nearly every rebound within reach below the rim though and averages a double-double. He has really improved his footwork and can finish around the basket with either hand. Has a jumper out to 15 feet that is rarely used. Really improved defensive player as well. If Iowa doesn't fair well in a physical game in the paint, they will hate Stokes.

Jeronne Maymon, Senior PF: Maymon is a 5th-year senior and the vocal leader of the team. The rebounds that Stokes doesn't get, Maymon does, and he nearly averages a double-double himself. He has really been slowed by his knee injury from last season and is not the same player he was two years ago from a quickness and athletic standpoint, but he seems to have found ways to compensate and do so without trying to do too much late in the season. That was an issue early on. He is another good defender who takes a lot of charges and doesn't give up his ground in the paint.

Josh Richardson, Junior SF: JRich is kind of the glue guy for the team. He is a jack of all trades, and is one of the best defenders in the SEC. Probably the guy who draws Marble IMO. He also has an excellent mid-range and pull-up jumpshot. He's really long and athletic and can get to the rim as well, but generally pulls up around 7-8 feet and shoots. Really improved his outside shot and currently leads the team in 3-point %.

Antonio Barton, Senior PG: Barton is the brother of Will Barton (Memphis), and transferred as a senior to Tennessee from Memphis. He is really a SG in a PGs body, but has a really good outside shot, and has been money as of late (shooting 50% from 3 in his last six games I believe). Pesky on-ball defender and underrated, though unspectacular passer.

Bench: (You won't see much off the bench IMO, so I'll keep this short)...

Darius Thompson, Freshman PG: He is improving as a PG, but his future may be at SG. He is a tall kid (6-4 I believe) and has great vision. Really good passer and decision maker, but has struggled with lazy passes at times lately. Has a long way to go defensively and as a ball-handler against pressure. If you all are going to press, I would imagine it will be when he is in at PG.

Armani Moore, Sophomore SF/SG: Moore was actually recruited as a PG, but it became apparent he couldn't cut it as an SEC PG. He is similar to Richardson as an athletic jack of all trades, but is less polished at this point. He is an freak of a jumper, and I would imagine has the highest vertical on the team. Has shown an increased outside shooting ability lately and is an excellent driver and finisher in traffic. Probably the best hustler on the team as well. Always around the ball defensively and an excellent shot-blocker at his size (6'-5"ish).

Derek Reese, Sophomore SF/PF: Reese will spell Maymon and Stokes and is a much different player. He likes to float around the perimeter offensively and fancies himself a 3-point shooter, but is streaky. Has decent form but an extremely slow release, so unless he's wide-open, he won't get it off. Pretty good rebounder and improved as a defender, which has allowed him to take playing time from freshman AJ Davis over the second half of the season.

Overall, this is a game of contrasting styles. Iowa being the uptempo bunch, and Tennessee being the halfcourt bunch. Tennessee has actually succeeded in an uptempo game when they have gotten out and run this season, but this is a game where making Iowa uncomfortable in the halfcourt game may be the best option. I don't think we want to get out in a transition game with a team that thrives on it.

If we can dictate tempo, be physical in the paint on both ends, and hit open shots (especially Barton), then I like our chances. If we try to run, get down early, and McRae starts to take too many deep, ill-advised shots in an effort to get us back in it, you could run away with it. How physical the officials allow it to be will be key too. They can take Stokes and Maymon out of the equation with a tight whistle.

Should be a good game and good luck to you all!

2 excellent analysis. Both referenced "how the refs call the game" as a big influence on the outcome. I watched parts of several different games in different conferences this past weekend, and it struck me that the refs have swallowed their whistles and allowed the players to decide the outcome more than they did during the regular season (TN vs FL excluded). I would expect it to continue as a foul fest makes for lousy TV. March madness is college Bball's time in the spot light so I would expect more physical play as a general rule.

Thanks for reciprocating. Lots of great info. I'm hoping that the physical nature of the Big Ten has prepared us for your biggins inside, but I'm not sure there's a team with two guys with their ability (and girth).

Welcome to the board BrewHawk...you'll be respected by everyone here except
a few. If their username rhymes with Pop make sure you avoid them they are negative Nancy's. I've been checking out one of your boards and they seem more down about your team then our fans were (it was awful in here a couple weeks ago.)

Anyways stick around after the game win or lose. We have a ton of different groups here on this board ranging from sports, politics, movies, gaming, etc...we respect all opposing fans (minus Memphis and Bama fans) and that's only because they are disrespectful.

Welcome. Nice post. Agree with two teams in the same boat. So in conclusion there are four teams in the game and we won't know which ones those will be until the final buzzer. Sounds about right for this game.
WELL...GO VOLS

Welcome to the board. As a rival fan here myself I can tell you that it is a very friendly bunch 'round these parts.

It helps if you occasionally post pics of, or have as your avatar, pics of scantily clad cheerleaders/randoms. Here, I'll get you started:

Bama fans are not disrespectful..... They are ignorant and stupid.

On defense, you'll see all sorts of approaches with some of it designed to confuse the offense. Toward the end of the Big Ten season, nobody was confused. Earlier in the year our defense was actually very well thought of, which is why we ascended to a #10 ranking.

.

This is what will give Tennessee fits. The Vols will be forced to make in game adjustments and that has not been a strong point.

Thanks for the info BrewHawk and welcome to the board. Did Devyn Marble's dad play for the Hawkeyes in the late 80s? I remember a Roy Marble playing during that period, I"m assuming there is some relation between the two. Iowa was highly ranked during that period, weren't they?

Yes, they are father and son. Actually up to the #6 all-time NCAA duo if my numbers are correct. And #2 all-time at the same school.

Roy is Iowa's all time leading scorer with 2100 some odd points and Devyn is now up to 1600+

No, I live in Texas :)

Check out Iowa Nice Guy. You may have seen his sarcastic, dry humor on ESPNU this past fall. Warning, there is some profanity in the video. It was originally composed as a reply to some jackoff's disparaging column in an east coast magazine.

Live in Texas, can confirm there's internet here. I'm in Houston and I wish Google Fiber would come just a little farther south..

Great post Brew, appreciate it.

The Vols are going to slow the game down and be incredibly physical with you.

You do have a really nice mismatch with Aaron White. Josh Richardson will most likely guard Marble and my best bet is Jordan McRae will guard Aaron White, so you will have that mismatch with White.

I notice you guys are excellent offensive rebounders, but struggle some on the defensive glass. Tennessee is one of the ten best rebounding teams in the country both offensively and defensively. I think if UT can get >10 offensive rebounds and shoot >30% from three UT wins. If Iowa gets to 70 points and shoots 25 FTA, they will win.

My experience with Iowa fans has been uniformly positive. Been to a couple of football games up there over the years, and I've got some family in the state. Good people.

If McRae guards White I could see Aaron spending a lot of time in the post. Also wouldn't be surprised to see double team help on him either, so White's passing ability will be tested.

Is White a good passer? You guys spread the ball around very well (top 50 assist percentage in the country). I'm curious how well you rotate the ball against us. You might see some 1-3-1 zone.

Also, how much do you mix up your defenses?

I wouldn't call him a great passer, but he's adequate.

There's a lot of assists due to the transition emphasis.

We've had to become proficient vs the 1-3-1 because both Michigan and NW play a fair amount of it. I think we'll get our points on offense. I'm just not sure we'll show up on D.

You'll see a bunch of different looks on D from man to half court trap to 2-3, 3-2 and then a 1-2-2 3/4 press. Lotsa variety.
