That was a really well thought out post and I reject all of it.

Jk man glad to have your insight. Don't be a stranger. Can't believe I said that to a Hokie. GBO!

First of all, I would like to thank Vol Nation (well most of you) for the warm welcome, when I came upon this site. I plan on continuing be a regular contributor, as I have never rooted for an SEC school, but I guess I will root for Vol's as my SEC favorite now.

My perspective of the game....(I had to sleep on it)

The physicality of the game from both teams was what I expected. The outcome was Not! I thought that the Vol's were gonna win by a close margin, but the fact of the matter is...21 points is a lot.

I will make no excuses for my Hokies losing, as It is evident that we have some physical, talented athletes on the field, but they lack discipline, and the will to win on the big stage.

Turnovers were a Hugh part of the "score" outcome of the game. That is part of football, the Vol's defenders, did a great job of attacking to the football and dislodging 2 of the balls for turnovers resulting in a short field to score on. 2 other turnovers were the result of lack of execution by my Hokies. Again, the Vol's capitalized and that's what good teams do. The 5th and final..(geesh did we really have that many) was just some bad luck with the special teams player being in the wrong spot at the right time, again it's Football.

This is one of the first time's that I have witnessed my Hokies lose a ballgame, and come away, actually with some optimism in a loss. You see, the losses that Hokie Nation have been accustomed to were the result of poor coaching, and an inept offense. I saw flashes of a really good offense, and the Defense, regardless of the scoreboard will be special this year.

With all that being said, The Vol's played better as a team, capitalized on physical and mental lapses by the Hokies and won the ballgame...ok Enough about my Hokies!

Since I will be rooting for the Vol's this season to win the SEC, here is my 2 cents.

The Defense will be the strength of team 120....period. Shoop made great adjustments in the 2nd quarter and throughout the rest of the game to limit what Fuente was trying to do.

The OL needs a lot of work. They started to make adjustments with personnel as the game went on and it started to improve. SOMEONE has to teach them what to do when the DLine stunts, as that was where the struggle began.

Dobbs, seems to be more accurate when he has time to throw the ball...obviously, but I never saw one slant pass over the middle. When the LB's blitzed, the middle was wide open.

More Kamara catching passes out of the backfield is gonna be needed to compete in the SEC.

Those are just a few of my observations. Play well against Ohio!

Spot on analysis. Thank you for posting this and don't be a stranger.

Us regulars have a hard time posting these sort of observations, as we get a bad backlash for being negative.

Thanks again for such a good post.

Thanks OP, but I find it odd for an "outsider" to refer to the Vols as team 120...not common opponent knowledge. Anywho, thanks for the thoughts and good luck to your Hokies the rest of the way

With Fuente as HC, VT has a bright future. We saw glimpses of it Saturday night. You'll have some really good players, and Fuente should be able to recruit a lot more in the near future. Hope VT wins out the rest of the season.

Good post OP...your comment about never throwing slants: Even after 4 years now, I cannot understand why Butch refuses to call a slant. Teams get to spy Dobbs or blitz with lb because they never have to cover anyone...and typically, the middle of the field is wide open.

It's always interesting to have some different perspectives. Especially from someone as classy and gracious as you have been. The Hokies definitely are on the upswing. Fuente was a great hire, and I expect them to be kicking butt in the ACC for years to come.

Best of luck, and thanks OP.

I've lived in Memphis the last few years and by default follow that program a little bit. You all did very well in getting your new coach and should have bright things to look forward to. Best of luck the rest of the season!

very nice intelligent post......we're saving up many things, i.e., slant across the middle, for the Gators...we'll see the whole playbook then...:salute:

PS. Thanks!

GO VOLS!

FWIW Fuente is a superstar, especially if he can retain Bud Foster. I'd trade Butch for Fuente straight up, no question.

FB Sam Rogers is going to play at the next level. I was worried every time he touched the ball.
In the 1st Qtr it seemed like all of the Va Tech runners gained an extra 2 or 3 yards after contact.
The 1st fumble really seemed to break Va Tech's will, and made UT more aggressive on both sides of the ball. It's always amazing how much emotion effects a football game, especially on the college level.

They throw to a TE sometimes in the middle on a middle distance route, and it almost always seems to work. At the very least it hits the TE in the hands. I want more.

I think we avoid the middle of the field passing because generic stats show an increased likelihood of a turnover. The coaches seem to be into the whole money ball/stat sheet thing. And of course, it also lulls defenses to sleep in the middle making it easier to sneak a big one in once or twice a year, but that's really just a coincidence. I believe stats are the root.
