Per Thamel: Heupel informed team this morning that Vols would move on from Nico.

this is a great post by Jack Mac. I'm so glad that the narrative around this is not going to make Tennessee look like a total embarrassment like these things usually do.

Nico is being portrayed as a kind of mid QB who was overpaid by Tennessee and college football is dying in front of our eyes because of NIL. this is great for Tennessee.

I'm actually happy with this. I've not been on the Nico bandwagon since about half way through the season. He's not been on the same page with our receiver core the entire season. You put up gaudy numbers against crap quality teams, but got exposed every time we play the quality opponent. It's easier to get rid of the quarterback than the entire receiver corps. Send the message to all future recruits and current players. You are not "the team". And most of all, I'm so happy to have a program with a spine. Even if we lose a couple of games, I would rather send the message then start the circus with a bunch of players always jockey for more money
Correct. If you want $4 million, you need to get it done against Ohio State, not just Kent State. And if you beat Ohio State, you'll get paid without even having to ask, let alone try to hold the team hostage.

I don't wish him ill, and he was good. But he wanted to be paid like he was great, and great is something he has not shown.

Reports are starting to come out that it was Dan Lanning who initially reached out to Heupel and told him Iamaleavin was sniffing around for more money.

**Edit** Didn't see this had already been posted. Been away for awhile.
I told my kids our second favorite team is now Oregon. My daughter said, oooh I like ducks.

Nico is a tall and skiny Joe Milton. Throws bullets with no loft. Look like he afraid to take a hit when he runs. He must think he is a lot better than most of us think he is.
He is sure is not worth $4 mil. He's lucky he got 2.5mil. If you don't want to give it all for UT then leave thank you.

By all accounts Nico was a great teammate and locker room guy. I think he wanted to be here, he is just trusting people who are making it more about themselves and their wants. Sad to see.

If he wanted to be here, he would still be here. That’s just people taking up for him and making excuses

I wonder who reached out to whom first? Heupel to Barnes, or Barnes to Heupel.

Barnes: "Oh, yeah, and I got the T-shirt. Might be a bit small on you, but..."

I suspect any coach or program pushing they are the high integrity or religious types are going to avoid Nico. There will always be a coach on a hot seat who needs a QB to keep the AD off his donkey that would take the gold out of a corpses mouth in the casket for a win that will sign Nico in a flash. I seriously doubt Nico and his family are going to get offers from where they want and it will be more like they'll take offers from what they can get before it's over IMO. You know a guy like Hugh Freeze before his conversion would be prime to sign Nico or even Kiffin.
I will bet Nico already has a deal locked up. This whole thing seems to be just a way to exit.

So it’s official right? Assuming the program won’t release any kind of statement or anything and he’ll just appear in the portal?

Nico obviously has an involved close knit family and he trusts his father. No 20 year old kid in that situation is going to buck their father with such a huge decision. Not an excuse but important context.

I mean I get what you are saying and you may very well be correct but we will never really know what his family is like behind the scenes. And, if you have ever watched the Junior Seau documentary, an involved dad isn’t always a great thing and can ruin a career much like Ball family

Had he gotten us to the championship game win or lose nobody is complaining about him getting paid more.

Maybe a reason to not let dad be your business manager. He will be the Brittany Spears or Jessica Simpson of college football instead of the Kardashians. He’s from LA, he could have got better representation to help guide him/them..

Per @Fingers, Merk has been balling out this Spring.

**** the portal. I mean maybe a backup. But give the reins to our home-grown boys.

He's no Joe Milton

I didn't see much of that on the sidelines

I am glad he is gone, but he didn't look like someone who was afraid to take a hit in the OSU game. He had some tough ass runs in that game and that's just a fact. Again, I'm glad he's gone given the circumstances, but your post is ignorant AF

Well shite, I’m not sure what to say except for I can understand how this sucks for you guys!

I obviously dont have knowledge of why so I’ll refrain from giving a strong opinion, but to me it serves a bit as a reminder of where CFB is going.

Were I a Vol, my initial reaction to this would be “Don’t let the door hit you in the butt on your way out”. Granted, this view is with limited knowledge.

In any event, maybe one of your young guys step up, Merklinger and Macintyre are both talented.

It sucks for some BS like this to happen, especially right now, but I can’t imagine CJH can’t navigate this QB situation. It sucks and it’s a huge letdown, but it will work out.

All those people who criticized Joe Milton and screamed for Nico should feel pretty stupid about now.
All those people who defended Nico after everything we saw and heard last season should feel stupid. No one should feel stupid for wanting to move on from Joe Milton. Every team he has ever played for immediately got better once he left.
